LOCAL COLLEGE/PREP ROUNDUP: Lee County softball finishes runner-up in 1-AAAAA tourney; Crisp claims 1-AAAA title

LEESBURG — Lee County scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally past Harris County in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament semifinal game Thursday before falling to Thomas County Central in the region championship game.

Lee County’s 5-3 victory against Harris County gave it homefield in the opening round of the state playoffs, but the Lady Trojans ran out of gas in the championship game and lost, 5-0.

The Lady Trojans, who entered the region tournament as the No. 3 seed, will be the No. 2 seed and host the Region 4-AAAAA No. 3 seed in the state playoffs, which begin with a doubleheader Wednesday.

Erin Callaway was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing six hits and striking out two. Brandi Blunt (3-for-5, 2 2B, RBI), Danielle Davis (2-for-5, 3B, 2 RBI) and Ashley Morris (2-for-4, RBI) led the Lady Trojans at the plate in the opener.

In the championship game, Lee County committed seven errors and had only three hits.

“We were just a little mentally spent from the win against Harris County,” coach Lynn Avery said.

Crisp wins 1-AAAA title; Worth second

CORDELE — Host Crisp County won the Region 1-AAAA softball title Thursday with an 11-3 win in five innings in the championship game against Worth County, which dominated the region in recent years.

Crisp advances to state as the No. 1 seed, while Worth is No. 2, Cairo No. 3 and Albany High No. 4.

Abby Thompson led Worth with two hits and two RBI, but the Lady Rams got little offense from anywhere else.

DWS closes season with lopsided win

ALBANY — The Deerfield softball team overcame an 8-2 deficit after two innings to win its final game of the season Thursday, beating Fullington, 18-12.

The Lady Knights finished the season with a 4-12 record and didn’t advance to the state playoffs.

Kendall Kirkland was the winning pitcher, while Kelsey King led DWS at the plate with four hits, two doubles and three RBI. Also for the Lady Knights, Madison Crosby was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, and Emma Schneider was 2-for-2.

Albany State volleyball loses second straight game

ALBANY — After winning 12 straight games against conference opponents, the Albany State volleyball team lost its second in a row Thursday.

The Lady Rams jumped out to a 2-1 lead against Division I Alabama A&M but then lost the final two games to fall, 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 22-25, 27-25, 11-15), and fall to 14-9 overall.

Jillian Anderson and Sharme Ridley led the Lady Rams’ net attack with 21 and 20 kills, respectively, while Ashley Johnson added 12 kills. Jennifer Johnson (61 assists), Adrienne Morris (17 digs) and Jennifer Evans (16 digs, 7 kills) also had big nights for ASU, which next plays again at home Saturday against Paine College.
