ALBANY, Ga. -- The Fire Prevention Justice League superheroes have a newly outfitted firetruck to help them do battle against their archenemies during the 18th annual Kids Fire Safety Day.

The battle engages in the Albany Civic Center between Super Chief, Extinguisher Girl, Smoke Detector, Waterboy and the villains at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The idea behind the battle with the Firestarter Gang illustrates how it is always best to have two ways out of a building in an emergency, said Albany Fire Department Assistant Chief Sebon Burns.

"We have built a new truck for the show; it's a beauty," said Burns. "It isn't any clown car."

The superheroes will need the equipment to go up against the nefarious, nasty and foul-smelling gang members Scorch, Smoke, Matchboy and Flame.

It is a cinch that Sparky the Fire Dog will make an appearance to entertain, educate and pal around with possibly more than 4,000 children, parents and teachers who usually attend what is billed as the largest fire safety show in Georgia.

The event is always held the week of Oct. 9 to commemorate the great Chicago Fire of 1871. That fire killed hundreds and destroyed more than 3 square miles in he city. That fire also originated the urban legend that Mrs. O'Leary's cow started it by kicking over a lamp.

Preventing fires no matter the cause also ranks high on what the firefighters will be speaking about at the show, which will be filled with skits, games and prizes motivating children and parents to learn the best ways to plan two exits from a building and prevent fires.

Oh, and despite what the chief says, there will be clowns, plenty of clowns.
