Voter registration deadline nears

One thing that last week's presidential debate did was it got people thinking about the electoral choices they have next month.

But there's another day coming much sooner that is just as vital to many U.S. citizens who will want to have a say in how they are governed.

Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 General Election.

For a lot of us, the day comes and passes with no impact. Those already on voter rolls don't need to do anything, and those who don't plan to exercise one of America's most precious rights can continue without concern.

But for those who are just now of voting age and those who have put off registering, it is a critical deadline. It's also the final day that a voter who has a change of name or a new address can get those changes into the voting system before the election.

It's not hard to find the forms that you need. They're available at local elections offices, public libraries and agencies that provide public assistance.

Regardless of who you support in various races and which party you feel an affiliation with, you can't pick up a ballot unless you're eligible to vote. And you're not eligible to vote unless you're registered.

If you aren't registered and you're concerned about the directions in which your community, state and nation are headed -- and what will be ahead for your children and grandchildren -- take a few minutes and get involved in democracy. Take the small amount of inconvenience that is involved in getting your name on the voter roll.

Then, find out everything you can about the candidates who will appear on your ballot Nov. 6. Make informed decisions with a sense that America's future depends on it.

After all, it does.

I hope everyone in Georgia will make sure they are registered to vote. If you do not vote, do not blame the way the government is run if you are not willing to do your part. Do not throw away your democratic right. There are far too many countries that do not have this freedom. I hope you will make an educated choice and not throw away a vote to a third party.

Above all, I sincerely hope there will be no voter supression.
