Darton men’s soccer shuts out rival GPC

ALBANY — Darton State College’s men’s soccer team beat GCAA rival Georgia Perimeter College, 4-0, on Saturday.

The No. 1-ranked Cavs’ 12th straight win followed another landslide, GCAA victory – 5-0 over South Georgia College on Monday – leaving no doubt that Darton is at the top of conference as the Region 17 tournament draws near.

Darton sophomore Jowayne Laidley led the scoring effort with two goals, including a breakaway goal in the second half that put Darton up 3-0 and seemed to deflate any hope the Jaguars had of coming back.

Jorge Torinos and Andrew Palumbo also scored. Alejandro Garcia, Troy Tucker and Palumbo had an assist each.

The Cavaliers are now 12-0 overall and 7-0 in the GCAA. Their last regular season home game will be 7 p.m., Monday, against Georgia Military College.

LADY CAVS 6, ABAC 0: The Darton State College women’s soccer team shutout Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, 6-0, in a GCAA matchup at home, Friday.

Darton’s Chi Chi Hikita led the scoring, banging two into ABAC’s net. Teammates Stephanie Anes, Kim Treutel and Savanah Cantrell scored one goal each.

But it wasn’t just Darton’s offense that lead to such a lopsided finish.

The Lady Cav defense didn’t allow a single shot onto their goal.

“Defensively we were very solid,” women’s soccer coach Ken Veilands said.

The Lady Cavs are now 7-5-0 overall and 7-3 in conference play. They’ll face Georgia Military College at home Monday, at 5 p.m.

DARTON XC SHINES: Darton State College freshman Alexis Skiles ran a 20:45 5K to lead the Lady Cavaliers cross country team to a first place finish at the Point University Invitational race, Friday, in West Point.

Alexis finished eighth overall to rank among the Top 10 along with sophomore teammate Hayden Clapper, whose 21:05 5K placed her 10th overall.

In the men’s collegiate 8K, Darton finished second to Morehouse College, 29-56.

Finishing fourth, fifth and eighth, Jared Richmond (27:31), Cody Mallchok (27:37) and Hank Campbell (28:15) all earned Top 10 honors for Darton.
