Dougherty County School Board Chairman James Bush and board member Velvet Riggins chat before the board’s monthly meeting Monday night, where the board accepted the retirement of Interim Director of Curriculum Mertia Jones.

ALBANY, Ga. -- The Dougherty County Board of Education accepted the retirement of Interim Director of Curriculum Merita Jones at its monthly meeting Monday night.

Jones, who has 40 years in the system, will retire effective Nov. 30.

During the Board's pre-briefing, Supt. Joshua Murfree also informed the members that new Human Resources Director Farrell Young of North Carolina, has said he will be able to assume his new position on Oct. 29.

Murfree also addressed a state Department of Education (GaDOE) letter in regard to the DOE setting a timetable for the District to hire a permanent principal at Albany High.

The school has not had a permanent principal in the past eight months since the Board suspended Angela Schumate after she was ensnared in the CRCT investigation.

The Georgia DOE letter set several deadlines for the system, requiring the District to hire a principal by Oct. 29.

"I'll be on the phone with Atlanta in the morning, to let them know I am ready to make a recommendation." Murfree said.

System attorney Tommy Coleman advised Murfree to follow the guidelines set out by the letter.

"Remember, they are the ones with the money," Coleman warned. "If you don't follow the letter they won't give us the money."

In other business, Murfree confirmed that former Morningside principal Gloria Baker, who is awaiting trial on school lunch fraud charges, has been reassigned as assistant principal of the South Georgia Regional Achievement Center.

He also confirmed that the system will return to the state $95,000 in Race to the Top funds from FY2012 because the money, intended to pay for transportation costs, was never spent.

The Board will hold a called meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday in executive session to discuss Murfree's contract status. That meeting is closed to the public and to the media.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 24 at Sherwood Acres Elementary School.

Wednesdays meeting should be shortlived, and the severance done away with. For if there ever were a failure to perform to even the most basic requirements, he is it. Yes, I am a Hater. I hate incompetance promoted beyond it's ability. I hate Leaders that don't lead. I hate con artists that have gotten themselves promotd way beyond their caapability. However, I mostly hate someone pocketing the Publics dollar and not even doing a reasonable attempt at accomplishing their job goals.

Effectively the State DOE is managing the key decisions and actions of the DCSS by Mandates. Basically the State of Ga. DOE sends a letter pointing out the violation or lacking areas and says you have till this date to do the following list of things or else the Funds will be witheld. The DCSS gets the letter and #34 Murfree gives the DCSS Board some lip service like no problem I got this under control we just fixing to do this anyway when we got the letter. Newmedia runs the story and Tommy Coleman reminds the Old #34 now be sure to follow the lprocedures or we won't get the money. I

Thanks for giving our system a bad name, blame it on whatever, remember to blame yourself. If a community is to grow it will take support from the community.

Running your mouth is not support, volunteering is great support.

I refuse to comment, when difficult people display racist Idelologies.

The Real -Semi - Retired Deal.

The Bubbas still disowns BSR

I know when I am being called a Racist, it is because commentator can't find fault with the statement, so attacks the reporter. Remember, some can still remember that the Alumni at ASU wanted him gone because of problems with the Athletic Programs. There wasn't any way he was leaving on his own, and they didn't want to deal with severance pay. So a deal was struck to feist him off on the City of Albany, and preserve his dignity and income. Shame they just didn't have the guts to fire him. When a persons abilities are in doubt, promote them out.

B...vet, what are your terms for elected officials who hire the 34th best candidate for chief school administrator? Who take money from poor childrens lunch and school supply funds and squander it on friends for pointless consultations? Who refuse to terminate principals who cheat on financial forms to steal money from poor students? Who hire teachers with the skills barely of a custodian and put them in your children's class rooms? What do you label these people? Contributors to the blogs are not giving DCSS a bad name mostly we're just saying the rotten carcass smells to high heaven. The opportunity presented to the black community in DoCo is a once in a lifetime opportunity and the so called leaders are throwing it to the wind while they feed at the trough belonging to the poor children and families. As an apologist for their cause you are soiled by their misconduct.

ARE YOU TALKING TO MURFREE?

Amazed2 1 year, 6 months ago

Bubber you been sniffing spray paint!!!

Amazed2 1 year, 6 months ago

Bubber guesz you are a "closet" volunteer?? Ol#34 makes his own negative feed and news by not doing his job. Again this is to be expected when a person black, white, pink or purple is hired to do a job. I would think the position should have been filled from a top 3 candidare/ applicant. Tell me one successful company that hires the 34th ranked least qualified person to run a multi-million dollar business. This is not a race issue as you want to sluff if off on it is a qualification and management or lack of problem. Of course you seemed prepared to lower the bar for all the children.

Bubbavet, you are a perfect example of what is wrong with DCSS. Place the blame on someone else. I am glad I do not have children in DCSS and have heard many folks complain they do not like it. Some of these people work there and have kids there. Not one of us on this site have made the school the way it is. Do not lay the blame on the writers here, look in the mirror because you seem to be the only one who accepts it. So the ones who really suffer are the students. DCSS abides alone by taxpayer money and they have to answer for those funds. It will be funny when the funds are cut off.

I would much rather read of the retirement of #34 and the nest of incestuous rogues at the school board. I understand the $95,000 that was returned unspent to GDOE was originally earmarked for #34's buddy Sabb for a consulting fee.

Meant to add: Has anyone heard yet whether there is confirmation of #34's academic credentials? Agirl was pretty adamant that there was no listing of his name with Howard U. alumni.

I doubt that "Howard U" will snitch on him.

"I'll be on the phone with Atlanta in the morning, to let them know I am ready to make a recommendation." Murfree said. I'm dying to know WHO his recommendation is... what friend or family member is getting this high paid job?

jglass 1 year, 6 months ago

waltspecht, nobody could have said it any better. bubba, you just comment to get people to respond, you cannot really be that ridiculous. And, the sad thing is they will probably renew his contract when the time comes.....remember we live in Albany and that is how things are done around here!!!

chinaberry25 1 year, 6 months ago

Walter, not just in Albany. It is done all over the country. Folks get back in office all over the country. Look at Ted Kennedy and his past and he still got re-elected for years.

mr_nobody 1 year, 6 months ago

The DOE instructed for the principal position to be posted on 10/9. #34 said yesterday he will be contacting them with a recommendation. Even if you do have a plan already in place, when the folks with the check tell you to do something, as Coleman says, you do it.

Yes, this will end well.

Murfree reminds me of former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (another completely incompetent "leader"). After failing to do ANYTHING to prepare for Hurrican Katrina and completely failing to take action even when ordered to by FEMA to evacuate people before the storm hit (the evacuation busses were sitting under water in a flooded parking lot after the storm), Nagin holes up on the 35th floor of an office building in New Orleans with an armed guard and phones off the hook. Yeah, that's the kind of leadership Murfree is giving Dougherty County.

Don't forget Washington D.C's Mayor Marion Barry with his cocaine and hookers, LOL

Murfree has no clue....When your DCSS Attorney says follow the letter...you better follow the letter.

The state has a lot of understandable interest in how the DCSS is working or not working these days. So, I must admit to being surprised when SACS seems to think things of value are coming out the end of the pipe. It seems all the money we pumped data to get on lunches, legally got and misspent, all the turmoil within the system, and the cheating that has gone on for a zillion years has produced adequate results, right? There seems to be a disconnect in the process when things are screwed up as Hogan's goat in the management and financial arenas and yet our system producing a barely functional product in many cases is still passing the accreditation process. Considering all of this, things are starting to smell more like Denmark with every day that passes.

1

FryarTuk 1 year, 6 months ago

I share the same concern about SACS. Generally, accreditation inspection has been compared to a panzer blitzkrieg requiring antacid pills and blood pressure medicine for even the distinguished private schools like Marist, Paces, & Westminster. It seems nobody broke a sweat in DoCo. I have a friend in Atlanta who sat on their evaluation brigade a while back and his response when I spoke to him was now they are more concerned if the paperwork is filled out and the pages numbered in ascending order. It is really fortunate to have the GDOE looking over the system's shoulder.

"I'll be on the phone with Atlanta in the morning, to let them know I am ready to make a recommendation." Murfree said.

Is this the recommendation for when to meet with the state or is he boldly thinking of recommending who should be hired? With Murfree, this one could go either way since he is prone to do or say something controversial in the face of overwhelming evidence to not speak or not do. Regardless, he will likely screw up something in the process so the BOE would be smart to take his phone away.

Wow What happened to BVR???? He trashed his black community in his rant above…..I was really taken aback when he said “Thanks for giving our system a bad name, blame it on whatever, Remember to blame yourself.” Wow what a blistering statement. Then he points out “If a community is to grow it will take support from the community.” Wow now he wants blacks to work with whites for a better Albany and is no longer satisfied with the train repeatedly being run off the tracks by the current Leadership. Then he dares to go after the Black Preachers with “Running your mouth is not support, volunteering is great support.” I just have to ask was he drunk or did he finally grow a backbone and now he understands the Race Card in Albany is a worn-out tired old excuse for the lack of personal dignity, integrity and self-motivation.

I was really shocked that BVR disowns BSR. Blacks Snubbing Reality Well BVR now that your mind has become open ,Welcome to the Real World
