Randolph Southern advances to second round of state tournament

SHELLMAN — For the third year in a row, the Randolph Southern softball team will be heading to the second round of the GISA state playoffs.

The Lady Patriots swept Bethlehem Christian in the first round of the Class AA playoffs Monday, winning the first game, 8-0, and the second game, 15-5.

“We played pretty well,” Randolph Southern coach Rand Ragan said. “(Bethlehem’s) pitcher was tough, and we had to settle for one run an inning or two here or there, but we played well.”

Randolph Southern ace Madison Ragan, who was runner-up for The Herald’s Player of the Year last season, threw a one-hitter in the opener and struck out 13 in six innings.

Morgan Lumpkin started the second game and got the win, and Ragan threw the final innings and didn’t allow a hit.

The Lady Patriots (16-3) were led at the plate by Lumpkin, who was 4-for-4 with two RBI in the second game, and Dana McCarter, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the second game.

Others with good games at the plate over the two games were Parker Rigsby (two triples, four hits), Ragan (triple, home run, six RBI) and Beth Clark (triple, two RBI).

Randolph Southern, the smallest softball-playing school in GISA, plays Trinity Dublin, the largest GISA Class AA team in the state, Thursday in the second round in Shellman.
