Get used to it, Dear! The cellphone has taken over the lives of everyone! I'm wondering what's so important that it can't wait until they get home? Or are they simply bored to death!
Simply just don't wait on them.
You wouldn't work for me very long. That's the kind of attitude that hurts a business. As a business owner, if I have an employee who doesn't want to wait on customers they perceive as rude, I don't need you. You can ignore customers from your sofa at home. Of course, that doesn't pay very well.
Have to agree with BillyBob here, VSU. Putting up with customer shenanigans comes with the territory.
Well you ain't gotta worry about that, because I have no plans of quiting my job to work for you or anybody else. I am sure I make more money than you do and unlike you, I don't have time to sit on a sofa. If a customer is on a cell phone they don't have the time to be waited on in the first place.
I'm very glad things are going so well for you, VSU. It sounds like you have a wonderful head for business.
On a side note, FYI I personally would not ignore that customer, fortunately i do not work in retail so I don't have to deal with that so it was easy for me to make that comment, but in my above comments, if they are offended by the rudeness of the customer then simply don't wait on them. It's their choice. They may not have a job after that, but it is still their choice. Personally I would applaud the customer being ignored, serves them right. If all businesses ignored customers that were on the phone, that customer would have to buy from someone sooner or later or do without.
I apologize about the remark about making more money than you do, don't know if I do or not, but it was uncalled for in saying it.
Congrats to you on being in a line of work that does not require an end-user buying some type of product or service. Most jobs, at the end of the day, depend on someone buying a product, even if the job is on the manufacturing end. If no one wants to buy it, then the company doesn't need anyone to build it.
Don't assume people who work in retail/customer-facing jobs don't make good money. People have to be compensated adequately to put up with the aforementioned shenanigans.
I imagine most jobs at some point needs someone to buy their product to stay in business. Even a policeman needs to have people committing crimes to justify them being on the force. I am not saying committing crimes is a possitive thing, but if real society was like the make believe society of Mayberry then there would not be much of a need for police officers.
You did not read this. The cashier thinks its rude for a customer to come in on the cell phone. I have to agree. They hold up other potential buyers and it is very rude. I was behind a young man at Michaels and we were at least 3 in line. At the very moment the cashier started to help him, he filpped that phone and said what's up??? Rude and very in considerate of all involved.

Pray for that person because the devil has them in the form of a cell phone. Personally I do not want to be that found. I ignore most calls when I am away from home. Unless it is my husband and he never calls unless he really needs something.
Move on to next customer until they get off the phone or in Albany just let them enjoy the free phone your paying for by working to pay their welfare.
But they've been doing it so long (and so free) that the phone has become physically attached to their heads! To remove it would require a surgical procedure! Who they talking to all that time and who is paying for all those minutes? That's what I'd like to know.
I can hear my neighbors in the yard on their cell phones all day long and at night too if they are outside. The husband and wife must not have anything to say to each other. The cell phones are permanently attached to their ears. They do not take time to mow or maintain their yards but they have time for cell phones. This is sad for the neighbors because they can be heard many houses away.
I have started just sitting at my desk shuffling papers until they notice that I am NOT going to get up, then I slowly start toward the counter and make them speak to me, so that I can tell them I will wait until you are through with you call.....needless to say they will get through with the call pretty quick.
I actually saw a sign in one business, I can't remember what it said, but it was something about they would not service people that are talking on their cell phones.
Perhaps that customer is talking to someone about the items they are contemplating purchasing. Maybe they're on the phone with your competitor. As someone who depends on customers and their repeat and referral business to provide for my family, I would never begrudge them for using their phone. I'm glad they're at my business and I'm going to kill 'em with kindness and good service.
I treat them with kindness and courtesy but unless they are clarifying something about the transaction at hand I always excuse myself with "I'll let you have some privacy for your call." But I am glad to have them in spite of their being unaware or rude.
What you are saying could be true. However, it is still rude for them to be talking on their phone when you are trying to help them. The rudeness aspect comes into play when other customers are waiting on someone else to finish their cell phone conversation. I work in retail as well, and I see this on a daily basis.
If you only wait on the nice ones, you won't be in business very long.
Or perhaps they are talking about that jerk they went out with the night before.
A cell phone jammer would be a great and funny way to combat this problem. I believe that they are illegal in Georgia, however.
Funny up until the point where someone needs medical assistance and no one can use their phones...
If medical assistance were required inside a business, why could the land line not be used?
I still have one... My place of employment has one... They do still exist.
What would you do if you saw someone having a seizure or heart attack in Wal Mart? I'm sure eventually you would find a phone, but are you sure how to "dial-out?" Not everyone knows that some phones you press 9 to "dial out." Just the same, would it not make more sense just to use your cell phone?

I would locate the portible defibrilator, instruct an employee (they are everywhere) to call 911 and I would administer first aid. That way, the person familiar with the store could meet the EMT at the door and direct them to the location. Of course, I'm not a big time executive or anything, so I don't always have a cell phone stuck to my ear. ; )
If you say so, Jacob. Then you get sued by the person when you improperly administer CPR/defibrillator/life saving techniques because you are not a properly trained EMT.
I'm not sure which Wally World you are at (the new one in E. Albany, perhaps), but the ones I have been in lately do not have employees everywhere. The employees that can be located have about a 50-50 chance of knowing how to dial 911 on the phone anyways. Again, would it not be more efficient and effective to simply dial 911 from your cell phone?

I don't think people are afraid to embrace the 21st century, some people just think people overuse the technology. I mean just because one has a cell phone doesn't mean they have to be on it 24 hours a day.
I agree that some people think technology is overhyped and over utilized. I would argue that most people in this area are too set in their ways to properly learn something new.
Great point Jake. The wisdom here is stay out of Walmart and you won't have to go through all the histrionic scenarios these guys are fantacizing.

How is improper cell phone etiquette any different from being rude in person to person interaction. The phone up to the person ear is just as object, much like a gun is an object. Knowing how and when you use it is up to the person. Don't blame the technology; blame the individual.
Case in point. Don't blame the object; blame the person.
Customers complain because they can't get no service or no one will wait on them, yet when someone tries to wait on them they are too busy talking on the phone about what Aunt Jane or Sister Sue said about her potato casserole.
Also, I have heard customers talk about meeting on the corner in thirty minutes to buy some bud ( and I am not reffering to Budweiser.) ie weed.

Even worse, is when you are ready to check out and the employee is talking on the phone or another employee! Happens all the time!! You can't get good customer service in Albany - except maybe Chick-fil-A.
I have seen this a few times and it was utterly enfuriating, especially when I could hear the employee talking about her plans for that night.
I see most of you have never been outside of Albany......smh....Just ring my purchase up and take the payment. If Im on my phone it is important. I could care less if the cashier at dollar general, belks, burger king etc... thinks I am rude. I am the customer........ As for the comments about the "Obama Phones" you people are pathetic and will blame the Apocalypse on the President

Just because they are a cashier at the aforementioned establishments does not mean that you are somehow better. That kind of attitude towards people who work in retail is why the perceived levels of customer service declining. These hard-working people have to put of with people like you each day. This leads to a different attitude towards customers than years/decades past.
As to your comment about Obama Phones. I seem to recall every left-wing liberal blaming their child's flu symptoms on Bush. What goes around comes around. Just because you didn't follow politics until a black person was elected, doesn't mean you know anything.

Me and my husband had a bad experience once, we were trying to purchase $200 worth of merchandise and the only person that could wait on us was an employee waiting on a customer talking on her phone. The employee said we had to wait in line. 10 minutes past and she was still waiting on the other customer who was still on the phone. We went to complain to the manager and he said we had to wait till the other customer was finished. We finally just walked out of there and told the manager from now on we were taking our business elsewhere.
I think the cell phone issue is just an extension of how people are these days in general no matter where they are. I'm old and was raised in another time. I was taught when you are speaking to another person you look them in the eye and you give repect where respect is due. You are polite to others. Many people these days I guess were just raised differently than me. They do not see using the cell or not being respectful to others as being something bad probably because that's how they were raised. How do you fix something like that? Maybe I've gotten soft in my old age but I see it as just the way it is these days. You can't stay mad at these folks or you'll be mad all day for the rest of your life because something tells me it's not going to change.
