CAMILLA -- Alonzo Thurman "A. T." Rigsby, Jr., 74, of Camilla, darling husband, father, and grandfather, passed from this life peacefully on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 12 at First Baptist Church of Camilla with interment in Pebble City Cemetery. Rev. Dion Brown will officiate.
Active pallbearers will be Jeremy Rigsby, Wynn Rigsby, Nolan Rigsby, Brett Rigsby, D.J. Bean, Josh Johnson, Jim Rigsby, and Rick Faircloth. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of his Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.
A. T. was born on August 19, 1938 to the late Thurman and Bess Rigsby in Mitchell County, GA. He graduated from Sale City High School in 1956. He earned an Associate's Degree in Agriculture from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 1958 and a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture from the University of Georgia in 1959. A. T. married Gloria Connell Rigsby, the love of his life, on December 27, 1959.
A. T. and his sons farmed for more than twenty years. He returned to the University of Georgia in 1983. He began teaching in 1984. During the 1980's, he earned several advanced degrees including a Master's Degree and Specialist's Degree in Education from the University of Georgia; a Master's Degree and a Specialist's Degree in Leadership from Albany State University; and a Master's Degree in Education from Valdosta State University.
A. T. was an active member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Camilla since 1975. He was a former scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America. He was an enthusiastic gardener and enjoyed speaking about the joys of growing prize-winning roses. He was a member of the Rose Society.
A. T.'s family was his real passion. He was a devoted husband to Gloria for more than 52 years. He was a loving father to his four children and a proud grandfather of his thirteen grandchildren.
A. T. is survived by his wife, Gloria Connell Rigsby of Camilla; his daughter, Lisa Esta Rigsby of Camilla and her son, Jeremy; his son, Alonzo Thurman (Tracy) Rigsby, III and wife, Debbie, of Camilla and their son, Alonzo Thurman (Nolan) Rigsby, IV; his son, Edwin Bruce Rigsby and wife, Paula, of Dallas, GA and their children, D.J., Jackie, Wynn, Jay, Connor, and Katie; his son, Brenton Lewis Rigsby and wife, Jennifer, of Albany and their children, Katherine, Brett, Madeleine, Elizabeth, and John Allen; his twin brothers, Randy Rigsby and wife, Ruth, of Pebble City and Rudy Rigsby and wife, Dot, of Albany; his aunt Ruby Rigsby Sullivan; his dear cousin, Peggy Rigsby Braun; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m., Thursday, October 11 at Parker-Bramlett Funeral Home in Camilla.
Memorials may be made to DeSoto Trail Regional Library.
