Joshua Murfree Jr. is superintendent of the Dougherty County School System.
ALBANY, Ga. — The Dougherty County School Board met in a called closed executive session for nearly 30 minutes Wednesday to discuss the contract of Superintendent Joshua Murfree.
Murfree’s current three-year contract expires on June 9, 2013 and Board members gathered to discuss individual opinions on whether or not to renew his contract.
School Board attorney Tommy Coleman also participated in the meeting, which was not attended by the superintendent. It is customary that the contracts of superintendents are reviewed by the School Board months before the document’s expiration date.
Minutes were taken during the closed session and Murfree will be given a written summary sometime next week.
Board members refused to speculate on Murfree’s future, and by law are not allowed to discuss what goes on in executive session.
The Board has three options available — terminate the contract, renew it, or let it expire, and has not set a date when they will discuss Murfree’s contract in an open meeting.
Murfree was hired by the board in June of 2010 and given a three-year contract. He replaced former Superintendent Sally Whatley.
In other DCSS news, the State Department of Education, recognizing “special circumstances”, has agreed with Murfree’s new set of deadlines in regard to the hiring of a permanent principal at Albany High School.
Attempts to reach Murfree for comment were unsuccessful, but Deputy State Superintendent for School Turnaround Sylvia Hooker confirmed the two had spoken.
“Dr. Murfee and I spoke yesterday (Tuesday) and we adjusted some things in regard to the deadlines,” Hooker said. “Any time a SIG (School Improvement Grant) school loses a principal we have to be involved in the new hire. There are a lot of moving parts involved in this process.
“(Murfree) made no recommendation to fill the job, and even if he had we would not have accepted it.”
In an Oct. 2 letter to Murfree The GaDOE had issued a set of deadlines for the hire, but Murfree argued the original dates were not realistic and the state agreed.
The new deadlines agreed to by Murfree and Hooker are:
- Post Opening on Oct. 9
- Close Job Posting on Oct. 23
- Open Interviews Oct 24-25
- Cabinet Interviews on Oct. 26
- Request for Call Meeting on Oct. 26
- Call meeting Oct. 29 to recommend principal for AHS.
The GaDOE will be involved in the screening, interviewing and recommending of the candidate offered for approval of the Board.
Albany High has been without a permanent principal since former principal Angela Schumate was caught up in the CRCT investigation eight months ago. Scott Horton has been serving as interim principal since then.
