Men arrested after chase involving GBI

Garon Leon Mathis Jr. was handcuffed and taken to Dougherty County Jail by Albany Police Department officers after he crashed an SUV on 10th Avenue. He was fleeing from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents when he crashed.

ALBANY — Trying to elude Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents, Garon Leon Mathis Jr. crashed a red GMC 1600 SUV on the 1500 block of 10th Avenue Thursday, according to law enforcement officials.

Agents and Albany Police Department officers arrested 30-year-old Mathis and his passenger, 35-year-old Terry Kareem Cutts, both of Albany, after the crash at approximately 5:30 p.m. No one was reported injured in the crash.

“We wanted to make contact with Mathis about warrants,” said GBI Special Agent mark Pro. “He refused to stop and we pursued him.”

According to Pro, the moderate-speed pursuit ended when Mathis lost control, drove the SUV up a curb, blew a front tire and came to a stop at 1515 10th Avenue, about seven blocks west of Slappey Boulevard.

Mathis, wearing a ball cap and T-shirt proclaiming “Misfits,” was scheduled for trial on drug violations Monday, Pro said. Mathis has least four other open drug cases facing him, Pro added.

More charges, including drug charges for what appeared to be marijuana in a small plastic bag at the scene, will be brought against Mathis and Cutts, Pro said.

A Georgia State Trooper arrived at the scene later to handle the crash aspect of the case. When he ran the license plate of the Ford SUV that Mathis drove, the plate came back as belonging to a Kia Sportage.
