ALBANY, Ga. — It’s fall and football season in Southwest Georgia. Combine both during the third week of October and Albany State University transforms into a week-long family reunion. It’s homecoming time on campus as thousands of students and alumni experience the meaning of this year’s theme, “Lift As We Climb.”
The crowning of Miss Albany State University kicks off Homecoming Week activities. The coronation’s theme is “Celebrating Our Rich Heritage."
It gets under way today at 5 p.m. in the Albany Municipal Auditorium. The event also includes the royal court and queens representing campus organizations.
Admission is free. A reception will be held in the Student Center Ballroom located on the ASU campus.
Asia Cook was selected the 2012-13 Miss ASU during a pageant held in March. She is a homegrown junior biology major from Albany, whose reign officially begins after Sunday’s coronation.
Renniah Gay, a middle grades education major from Atlanta, is first attendant and Hillary Joy Scales, a Speech & Theater major from Hinesville is second attendant.
Mr. Royal Gentleman is Charles Benford, a criminal justice major and native of Saint Marys. First Royal Gentleman, Delvon Rhodes Lewis of Buffalo, N.Y., is a marketing major; and second runner up Jason Tracey, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. is a mass communication major.
Other homecoming week activities include the Gospel Explosion, featuring the ASU Anointed Gospel choir on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gethsemane Worship Center located at 529 10th Ave. Admission is free.
On Tuesday, ASU Police Chief John Fields and ASU Photographer Reginald Christian will compete in the Ultimate Barbecue Cook-off. The fun begins at noon at the Amphitheater.
The Homecoming Convocation will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the HPER Gymnasium located on campus. The keynote speaker is Frank Brown, teacher, coach, athletic director and school administrator.
Saturday’s activities include the homecoming parade at 9 a.m. on Pine Avenue followed by the homecoming game against the Clark Atlanta Panthers at 2 p.m. in the ASU Coliseum.
