CAMILLA -- David Glynn West, Sr., 92, of Hopeful, died Monday, October 15, 2012 at his residence.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Hopeful Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Ronnie Kinsaul and Rev. Joey Lee will officiate.
Active pallbearers will include William West, II, David Glynn West, III, Robert L. Holden, Jr., Thomas R. Davis, III, Thomas Alton Rogers, III, and David West Rogers. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Hopeful Baptist Church, W.W. Kirbo, Willie B. Wimberly, Jack Williams, and Glenn Cox.
Born March 28, 1920 in Hopeful, GA, Mr. West was the son of the late Dave West and Bessie Martin West. He was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine West Thornton and a daughter, Nancy West Holden. Mr. West was a 1937 graduate of Hopeful School and a 1942 graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. Some of his past achievements include, serving as a Captain of the U.S. Army during WWII in the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Division, former National President of the Brown Swiss Association, former National Director and Vice-President of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, a Baldwin Master Farmer, and former National Director of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association of America. He was a long time pioneer of the Dairy Industry in which he received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his business career.
He was an active member of Hopeful Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and long-time Sunday School teacher. Mr. West loved his church and his family and had many outside interests, including watersports, fishing, sailing, traveling, singing, and spending time with all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Iva MacAlpine West of Hopeful; two daughters, Glynda West Davis & husband, Ralph, of Hopeful and Alecia West Lee & husband, Bill, of Valdosta; two sons, David Glynn West, Jr. & wife, Lynda, of Hopeful and William Morgan West & wife, Renee, of Whigham; son-in-law, Robert L. Holden & wife, Margaret, of Whigham; twelve grandchildren, Thomas Ralph Davis, III & wife, Sylvia, Luci West Conine & husband, Rodney, Laura West Santos & husband, Eric, David G. West, III & wife, Layne, Catherine Davis Darnell & husband, Jeff, Claire Davis Shivers & husband, Chad, Robert L. Holden, Jr. & wife, Catherine, Suzanne Holden Finger & husband, Ray, Mary Davis Donahue & husband, Lee, Alle West Lee & husband, Joey, Fran Lee Misner & husband, Gavin, William Morgan West, II & fiance, Jill Gettler; and 31 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 - 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 17 at Hopeful Baptist Church.
