Murfree lacks board support for contract renewal

Joshua Murfree

Joshua Murfree

ALBANY, Ga. — Dougherty County School Superintendent Joshua Murfree lacks the support from the Dougherty County School Board to have his contract renewed, The Albany Herald has learned Thursday.

Murfree's three-year contract expires on June 9, and multiple sources have confirmed that he does not have the four votes on the seven-member School Board to support renewal.

The decision to not support renewal was reached after an Oct. 10 closed board meeting at which individual board members discussed continuation of Murfree's contract.

Sources say that at the conclusion of the 30-minute meeting, it was apparent that Murfree did not have the votes necessary for renewal.

Murfree was not present at that closed session, but minutes were taken and given to the superintendent. Sources close to the situation said Board Chairman James Bush and system attorney Tommy Coleman later had a meeting with Murfree in which the superintendent was given the option to "control his own destiny."

Bush would not comment Thursday afternoon. Board members Darrel Ealum, Carol Tharin and David Maschke also would not comment on Murfree's status

After the meeting, Assistant Superintendent Kenneth Goseer reportedly began making calls to people asking them to send letters of support for Murfree to the School Board members. That was when word of the board's non-support began to leak out.

Murfree replaced former superintendent Sally Whatley in June 2010 and took over just as the state probe of CRCT cheating in the system in 2009 was getting under way.

His tenure has been marked marked by controversies in which some involved with the school system have been accused of school lunch fraud, tampering with the school system Police Department and repaying bond money of an arrested student. There is state involvement in 16 different federal programs because of questionable expenditures.

It was unclear Thursday whether the board would allow Murfree to serve out the term of his contract. The next School Board meeting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sherwood Acres Elementary.

Oh Wow!!! I am shocked! The gang of four threw their own friend under the bus. Maybe when he drove to Atlanta to deliver the check, he dropped off his resume' to all the schools systems between here and there.

I hope this time they choose someone well-qualified, instead of their friend at the bottom of the list.

Oh dont worry they will screw it up again. They will hire #69 next time and give him/ her 4 years to meet qualifications at taxpayer expense.

What goes around comes around! Hey Murfree, isn't karma a @itch?

2

jglass 1 year, 6 months ago

WOW!!! Pinch me to make sure I am not sleeping!!! The board now needs to follow procedure in reference to not renewing the contract and it not costing them any extra money. Why is it that when you are not wanted you just won't do the simple thing and LEAVE!!!!!!! Knowing he did not perform his job well at all...........resign and get another job!!!!

After the meeting, assistant superintendent Kenneth Goseer reportedly began making calls to people asking them to send letters of support of Murfree to the school board members. That was when word of the nonrenewal began to leak out."

.........that's why the Board also needs to fire GOSEER who obviously isn't mature or professional enough to honor the need to not talk about something like this.

HE'LL BE GONE SOON, HANG TIGHT.

Yep and he nominated him for Super of the Year. Man, this guy is a real genius. LMBO

IF GOSEER IS STILL ASST.SUPER WHEN THE NEW SUPER COMES ON BOARD, WE WILL KNOW RIGHT AWAY IF HE/SHE IS QUALIFIED IF THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS TO FIRE GOSEER. NO WAY A TRULY QUALIFIED CANDIDATE WILL KEEP HIM ON.

3

MRKIA 1 year, 6 months ago

O.K. TERRY, TELL US THE NUTSHELL VERSION OF MURFREE'S CONTRACT WITH EMPHASIS ON CONTRACT RENEWAL.

2

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

I said last week I would be shocked if they did not renew his contract. Well I am beyond shocked. Never say Never! I bet Murfree doesn't have that smirky smile on his face now.

2

MRKIA 1 year, 6 months ago

HE WAS THE SOURCE OF A LOT OF NEGATIVE PRESS, REMOVE HIM, GET SOME POSITIVE PRESS AS WELL AS BEING THE CORRECT THING TO DO. THE TEACHING STAFF DIDN'T CARE FOR HIM EITHER. SEE HOW MANY CHEERLEAD FOR HIM.

2

Jacob 1 year, 6 months ago

Seems that Goseer set out to undermine his bosses. Sounds to me like he needs to start cleaning out his desk, too, since he can't seem to understand that he isn't in charge...

1

TRUTH101 1 year, 6 months ago

Great move!!!! Goseer should be next. Ship him back to Dawson.......

1

PERHAPS D. SABBS CAN FIND HIM AN OPENING AT PHOEBE. GET HIM A BLUE POLYESTER VEST AND LET HIM GREET VISITORS IN THE MAIN LOBBY. HEY!!! ASU!!!! YOU GUYS PALMED HIM OFF ON DCSS. Y'ALL LOOKING OUT OR WHAT? NOT CRAZY ENOUGH TO TAKE HIM BACK?

2

So I guess the Superintendent of the Year Award is out the window?

4

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Where is Da Corch AKA BSR AKA BVR, normally he would be on here laughing saying the school board is in fine shape and Murfree is here to stay. Guess it is hard to laugh with all that egg on his face.

3

bubbasmithredneck 1 year, 6 months ago

You always lie on the da corch...why is that? are you jealous of him?

1

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Be quiet coach, nobody was talking to you, just get back on your merry go round and get yourself high. Quit posting as bubbasmithredneck everybody knows you are Da Corch, or rather Da Cockroach.

2

You have no brains, keep quiet Coach, go back into hibernation for a few years. Nobody will miss you.

0

0

beavis2012 1 year, 6 months ago

Murfree should look on the bright side, it's ASU Homecoming this week and I'm sure he can find a buyer for his nice Jaguar.

4

TRUTH101 1 year, 6 months ago

The Jaguar was purchased before he became superintendent......While I never agreed with him being superintendent, he was a good professor and was making more than you before he became superintendent.......

1

Bulldawg 1 year, 6 months ago

Oh, Ok like you know how much we all make here. Don't make stupid comments about something you obviously know nothing about.

0

TRUTH101 1 year, 6 months ago

If you made more than him your envy over his car would not be so obvious......

0

Bulldawg 1 year, 6 months ago

I do not envy people who drive jaguars in the least. I would never own a Jaguar because they are unreliable and overpriced. My comment was reffering to your assumption that you make more money than Beavis2012 when you would have not idea of the salary in question. You also asume that I make less money than Murfree because I "envy" his Jaguar. I think you just need to stop making very uninformed comments.

0

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Yeah he was so great of a professor ASU was glad to get rid of him, and there are millions of people that make way more than Murfree. His yearly salary was a weekly paycheck to some people, so I am not impressed. Just because a person gets a big salary doesn't mean they earned it. He was about 600,000 overpaid. In fact he wasn't worth minimum wage.

0

TRUTH101 1 year, 6 months ago

And those millions of people would not bother to bring up his material possesions.......

0

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Or they would not even know or care who he was, and besides i didn't bring up Murfree's material possessions because I couldn't care less about it.

1

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 6 months ago

I really doubt this is going to happen though. Don't forget what Ross Perot said "That sucking sound you hear is all the Black Preachers in Town getting ready to fight for Murfree to keep his job."

2

tywebb 1 year, 6 months ago

i think it will depend on if bush voted yay or nay. i wonder which of the gang of 4 went against renewal

0

PatrickY2K 1 year, 6 months ago

Bush voted against renewing his contract. This may not even be 4-3 - it could be 5-2.

0

doingwhatisright 1 year, 6 months ago

Thank you God Almighty! The teachers are blessed!

1

waltspecht 1 year, 6 months ago

The question needs to be asked if Gosser made the calls on Dougherty County School System time and phones? It should be easy to check the Cell and the base phone in his Office. Then he can be terminated for cause. Abuse of system resources.

1

FryarTuk 1 year, 6 months ago

Hopefully the board will jettison Murfree and Goseer and Graper.

1

wino3800 1 year, 6 months ago

Thank goodness. Great move. A glimmer of hope!!! Go Dr. Lane !!!!

1

chinaberry25 1 year, 6 months ago

This is a step in the right directions for the school board. I sincerely think that most parents want their children to succeed. Now there is a lot to still be done, but move forward and hire a qualified superintendent that knows the ropes. Not just a figure head. If you hire a person who can handle his job, then you will have a lot less problems in the long run. Goseer should be fired for spreading word of what is coming down.

1

Sixty 1 year, 6 months ago

I would not quit either. I am sure there is a buyout in his contract. If he is fired, he gets the buyout. Trust me when I say this. The man is praying he gets fired. That would earn him a lot more money.

0

tywebb 1 year, 6 months ago

the contract is up at the end of this school year. there are no buyouts when contracts end

0

Sixty 1 year, 6 months ago

Part of the article said that he was asked to resign but refused. That was the part I was talking about. He is not going to resign. He is praying he will get fired. That will mean that there is a nice payday for him if his contract has a buyout. If he resigns, he will not get paid.

0

tywebb 1 year, 6 months ago

i gotcha. but i don't think that just because he gets fired, he is guaranteed a buyout. i guess that's just something we'll have to see about when/if terry posts the contract online. i'm thinking that as long as the board can prove he didn't do the job he was hired to do then they can fire without a payment.

0

bubbasmithredneck 1 year, 6 months ago

This is just a rumor so far. (I will believe it when I see it. ) This is not the end of this story. He has plenty of time left on his contract. Anything can happen!!

0

Bulldawg 1 year, 6 months ago

Umm, No, this is not a rumor. The time left on the contract has nothing to do with it. James Bush already asked #34 to resign and he refused. The board will meet next week to determine what the next course of action will be.

0

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Rumor has it that Da Corch, BVR & BSR are Murfree in disguise. That would explain why the DCSS is in such a mess.

0

bubbasmithredneck 1 year, 6 months ago

rumor has it VSU is in the "BINDERS OF WOMEN".......Romney speaks about....hehehe

0

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Rumor has it that Da Corch is an idiotic moron...Wait, that is not a rumor, that is a fact.

0

Probably at work like I do any other day of the week. We know where you will be, hopefully committing suicide, but more or less since you've never worked a day in your life you'll be in here making your usual asinine meaningless comments.

0

Demote him as he did Daniels and Floyd....he'll resign just as they did or since he is ceritifed place him into a classroom along with Goseer and Betty......ISS teachers!

0

Why do you want to punish the students?

0

Ummm something to ponder - - if the Rev Heard is elected he'll become the 4th to vote #34 back in.

0

RedEric 1 year, 6 months ago

EXACTLY!! All those absentee ballots are being filled out in his church and others across town with everyone trying to get the spelling close. They better get the CRCT investigators to check suspicious erasures.

0

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Perhaps they are booting Murfree out to install Rev Heard as the new Superintendent. That would be a mess, but in Albany anything is possible.

0

Bulldawg 1 year, 6 months ago

I never thought about it that way!! Someone needs to tell Heard that he should go for the gusto and run for Superintendent. LOL

0

FlunkyMonkey 1 year, 6 months ago

Look for the lawsuit!! Maurice King and his court need the publicity

0

Amazed2 1 year, 6 months ago

Yea i believe when it happens. Now all the black ministers tell their folks to work on the votes of the DCSS board. Find that member that said he has git to go and harrass him/ her till they reverse course.

0

Cranky 1 year, 6 months ago

Why do you say he is fired when a contract is not renewed? Does the contract have a stipulation in it that it can be not renewed and that constitutes being fired? Are you jumping the gun? How many of you have actually seen the contract and know the stipulations of it? Why not wait and see what the contract actually says before you get so excited about his leaving. If the contract had a non-renewal clause in it and he signed it then all is well and good. Of couse if he feels he was forced from his position he is going to put up a fight so dig in your heels.

0

Terry.Lewis 1 year, 6 months ago

I have a copy of the contract. Should I make it available online? And as someone close to the situation pointed out to me yesterday, much of what we hear as this story develops will be couched in semantics.

2

Cranky 1 year, 6 months ago

Please do. It will sure put a lot of rumors to rest.
Check first with your legal office to make sure you are within legal boundaries.

0

PatrickY2K 1 year, 6 months ago

The Board knows Murfree does not have the votes to get another contract, and have given him the opportunity to resign. They aren't going to keep him in his position until June. The will vote to fire him on Wednesday, and start the process looking for a replacment. They will owe him all of the money from his contract, but why keep him for an extended "lame duck" period?

0

jglass 1 year, 6 months ago

We will see come June 9, 2013. The "system" needs to do whatever is necessary so he does not get any additional monies. Tolerate him if they have to until!!!!!

0

Outtahere 1 year, 6 months ago

I just don't know what to say; I'm shocked - but in a good way!!! I think I just saw a little ray of light shinning down from heaven!!!

0

Shocked!!! And in a good way.

Why is this not the main headline!

0

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

Words of advice, don't celebrate too quickly, it is not a done deal yet. A lot can happen between now & then, I would take this news with a grain of salt. Until we see Murfree officially gone, I would not be too quick to declare victory.

1

saveourcity 1 year, 6 months ago

In order for him to lose support of the Board, then at least one of the "gang of four" flipped. Who?

0

Cartman 1 year, 6 months ago

My guess is Bush. He is a politician.

0

TheBoss 1 year, 6 months ago

Just think...what well educated individual would want to apply for the Superintendent’s position knowing about the dysfunctional Board of Education that we have in Dougherty County. James Bush will give the next Superintendent the same instructions he gave Murfree. "Do as I say and run the school system the way I want it."

0

Abytaxpayer 1 year, 6 months ago

Food for thought this maybe a story line used to incite Heard’s voter base to try and motivate them to write him in, to insure he gets in so he can vote to renew the contract and can save their beloved Superintendent. Heard is just a power move and not about the children.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 6 months ago

After having slept on this one and thought about it from several angles, I thinik Abytaxpayer has hit on the most likely scenario. Don't forget that bv_r warned us that there was a conspiracy afoot that would guarantee a certain outcome for the DCSS Board and Super.

0

chinaberry25 1 year, 6 months ago

Yes, he just may be right. But if this is exciting about write-ins, why would folks want their kids to be so poorly taught. I have heard many disgruntled black people upset about their kids future and schooling. Their future lies on it.

0

waltspecht 1 year, 6 months ago

How does anyone know that it is only one of the gang of 4 that voted not to support him. Possibly it is only one voting to support him

0

B4it 1 year, 6 months ago

Seems to me that someone should be investigating how Goseer found out about the Board's decision. If the meeting was confidential, how did he know to start petitioning others for supporting Murfree after the no-confidence vote was taken? Hmmmm????

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 6 months ago

Your question is rhetorical, surely!?!? Of course Murfree told him and of course Murfree told him to ask a bunch of people to send letters of support just like Murfree told him to bail out that kid from jail and told him to send in Murfree's name for Superdumbutt of the Year and told him to replace stolen musical instruments and Goseer did what he was told which makes him a really good flunkee.

0

B4it 1 year, 6 months ago

Bingo! Grounds for termination for both!

0

chinaberry25 1 year, 6 months ago

Ruby, what stolen musical instruments? Did that make the news?

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 6 months ago

During the Board meeting where the bailing out of the student was discussed, it was also discussed that some kids had musical instruments stolen out of the band room and those students were reimbursed for that cost.

0

Albany_Failures 1 year, 6 months ago

When will the cycle stop! Albany when will you each stop and take a look at yourselves. Take a real close at yourselves. All of you have been judgmental and the worst thing to happen to "your children" regardless who is on the Board and who runs it! Many of you all allow your children to misbehave, under perform in their classes, rather see them attend other 4 year schools outside of Albany in which they go and leave you in the hell you created...and I can go on but not now. YOU as parents and those nay sayers need to do something about the city of Albany. You all must create a climate in which where poverty is non-existent, a climate where you all believe that 'white' is 'right' for those who lead the aparthied of a city called Albany. Take a look at yourselves. Murfee may not have been great...but considering where many of you are and will be destined to stay along with your children who have failed and will be known for it's failures...in the scheme of life you all are failures and the world has seen it...SAD!

1

Bulldawg 1 year, 6 months ago

What on earth are you talking about? The city needs to vote leaders in that know what is best for this city. We need people with no hidden agenda. That is the only way Albany will improve. Ok, now go and take your Prozac, and hopefully you will feel better soon.

1

B4it 1 year, 6 months ago

A_F - the cycle will stop when people like you stop using race as your excuse for electing failed leaders! How dare you say "a climate where you all believe that 'white' is 'right' ". That is racist and offensive. Parents do have a role in raising their children correctly. It needs to start with people like you setting a better example for them to follow rather than trying to blame someone who may be white. If the black leadership is not making improvements, then look instead at their onging cycle of corruption, bad decisions, costly mistakes for not following proper procedures, and lack of taking corrective actions. Then it is your fault for accepting this kind of failed leadership. It only perpetuates itself for more problems for the future children. Stop seeing the color of someones skin and instead look at the character of the individual to see where the problem really is.

As for doing something about the city of Albany, it starts with expressing our disapproval for some of those in leadership roles who are failing in doing their jobs. Removing them from these positions and taking action is the next step to making the needed improvements you are referring too. Just because Murfree being criticized, does not mean it is because he is black. It is because he has failed to be an adequate leader.

Now get off of the racist thoughts and look for honest, and respectful, attributes in an individual so we can elect real leaders.

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Albany_Failures,

Your attempt to sound intelligent has unfortunately turned into a failure of epic proportions. I think I understand your point, however it is lost in your rambling, tainted logic, and various grammatical mistakes

I agree that in order to improve the quality of life for the children in the DCSS the parents must be more involved. Seeing as how this article is about the potential removal of another part of the problem which is plaguing the quality of education for the children in Doco, that is why you see the bashing of the Board. This is merely a step in the right direction, and by no means the cure-all for the school system.

"You all must create a climate in which where poverty is non-existent, a climate where you all believe that 'white' is 'right' for those who lead the aparthied of a city called Albany."

Are you saying that we as citizens must create a climate where "white" is "right?"

Kids, this is why you should stay in school, because if not, you could be someone like Albany_Failures. That name seems fitting for you, A_F.

0

VSU 1 year, 6 months ago

You failed to use proper english or grammar and even left out words, your whole comment is a failure.

1

tocar 1 year, 6 months ago

Albany_Failures, you are correct. It all begins with the parents. A majority of these children do not know who their Daddy is. Why do these young females and males who are but babies themselves feel that having illegitimate children is the correct thing to do? The Mothers live off of the system and do not have any incentives to do more than that. Until they break the cycle Albany will not get any better. As far as Murfee, the clown needs to go. We need strong leadership and supervision in all areas of the school system, but we need parents who will not repeat the same cycles.

0

bennydawg 1 year, 6 months ago

Albany_Failures...........Did you just have a small fit? You completely contradicted yourself. Ask yourself this question and be honest...if you were blind and were read Murfree's resume and his ranking among the other candidates would you be proud of the job he has done? Albany will never be great again until the voters of this once great city turn a blind eye to color and open their eyes to what will truly move the needle toward a better future for Albany and SOWEGA.
Unfortunately, I dont think that will ever happen given the widespread opinion that we the people belong to the government and they should dictate everything in our lives. If you want us to wind up like Greece, just vote for Obama. I would suggest however that you learn to garden, purify water and buy bullets.
