Winn-Dixie on Oakridge set to close

ALBANY -- The Winn Dixie supermarket at 200 E. Oakridge Drive will be closing, but company officials have not set a specific date for the closure.

"Business conditions occasionally force companies like ours to make tough strategic changes and decisions that have an adverse effect on our valued Winn-Dixie team members," said Rondel Cuyler, director of public relations at Winn Dixie headquarters.

"We are working diligently to ensure that all of our team members affected by these decisions are treated with dignity and respect, and team members are encouraged to apply for other positions within the company before the store closes or their release date.

At this time the exact date of the store closure has not been confirmed or announced."

Winn-Dixie also has three other supermarket locations in metro Albany -- Old Dawson Road and Sylvester Road in Albany and on U.S. Highway 19 in south Lee County.

Just how many times has this store been broken into by folks knocking holes in the walls? Wonder what the theft index for this store is. Then do any of us wonder why it is closing? Customer base, good or bad is what dictates business opportunities.

Probably a Loss Prevention decision. Only way to stop the shoplifting is empty the store and close down. Unfortunately the thieves will just drive a little further to a different location. Probably why Harvey's closed several years ago on Oglethorpe near Jefferson. Another one bites the dust in the Good Life City!

I have relatives working part-time at the Oakridge and Sylvester Road stores. The opening of the east Albany Walmart has hurt both stores financially big time. I am sure there wil be other closings that will follow.

I have a friend who was manager of an Albertsons in a welfare district of Omaha. Her store was profit leader for the first two weeks of the month. The rest of the month they had to get creative to keep from losing it all. She said they had to use codes over the intercom because if some said "cleanup on aisle three" there would be four people on the floor each with one foot in the spill.

This is a good example of the quality of people in that area. Steal it blind and close it down, seems like a good Idea. What will be next is a replication of the 1965 Watts riots. They will burn their own neighborhood down and say it it for the better. Then blame everyone else for them putting a match to the house and expect Government payment and intervention.

The foodstamp cards are meant to last the whole month. But when you in the first week of the month spend it all or sell the balance nothing left to use. I say we go back to the point in time you stand in line for actual food products and if you are truly in need you will apprecitate the fact that you have beans, bread, and milk. It is a shame that I work two jobs to make ends meet and do without meat many times in order to supply the basic needs to my family A hamburger on Saturday is a treat for my family. I stand in line at the grocery store and watch so many carrying a Coach Purse, with a perm, fake nails, IPHONE, driving Jaguars and such, and pay with an EBT card. After the grocery purchase they decide they need a pack or two of Newports and a few scratchoffs. Wonder where that money came from.

I guess people tend to forget that there more people receiving welfare benefits during the Bush/Cheney administration then anytime during the Obama/Biden administration. Just the facts.

Show me the facts! Don't just tell me what you heard King Obama say. There are more people unemployed, on welfare, and on foodstamps than any other time in the history of the United States.

You are correct hwga they had it on the news not to long ago how much the number of foodstamp recipients had gone up & how the number of SSI applicants has increased substantially as the result of the bad economy.
