ALBANY, Ga. -- It only took Melvin Jackson four years to pick up the Herald's biggest honor for its newspaper carriers.

Jackson was honored Thursday by his supervisors Belinda Walker, William Lemon and Herald Marketing and Sales Director Scott Brooks.

"I just try to do the best that I can," Jackson said, "and treat people right."

Jackson has found the job can be eventful. He, another carrier and three other people happened to be inside a BP station on Dawson Road on Aug. 15 when it was robbed by a masked gunman.

No one was harmed during the robbery and it wasn't enough to scare Jackson off the job.

"He's just that dedicated," Lemon said. "He's dedicated and he's got some of the best customer service skills of anyone we have.

"All of the people on his route have his number and he makes sure that if they miss a paper, that they get whatever is missed."

Brooks said that Jackson is the type of independent contractor the Herald strives to keep.

"His attitude is what we work to cultivate around here," Brooks said. "That's why we want to give him a pat on the back and show him that his work is appreciated."
