ALBANY, Ga. -- He won't be there, but bowling champion "The Dude" from the "The Big Lebowski" would probably love it.
Think of teams of cops bowling -- bowling! -- with residents to raise money to buy not doughnuts, but turkeys for a community Thanksgiving dinner. It would bowl The Dude over.
The first "Turkey Bowl" is planned for 2 p.m. Nov. 3 at Bowl-A-Rama on the 1200 block of West Broad Avenue by the APD Family Protection Unit and Albany's Smooth Roller Association.
"We decided against trophies," said Detective Chanita Salyer. "Each bowler of the first two or three winning teams will get a turkey instead. It is all for fun and community involvement."
Anyone bowling three consecutive strikes (a turkey in bowling parlance) during any game will be entered into a raffle for a turkey. Each four-member team can enter for $40 to roll in hopes of winning the "Turkey Bowl Champion" title.
Last year, officers fed about 250 people. They hope to feed even more this year at 5 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the Albany Civic Center on the 100 block of Oglethorpe Boulevard.
