SOWEGA HEADLINES: Valdosta MSA 3rd-poorest in nation

VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Valdosta Metro Area is the third poorest in the nation according to a recent online report based on census data and labor statistics, officials say.

The Valdosta Daily Times reports that Delaware-based online publisher 24/7 Wall St., released a report of “America’s Poorest Cities” on the Web Oct. 4 making the claim that the Valdosta Metropolitan Service Area, which includes Lowndes, Brooks, Lanier and Echols Counties is the third poorest MSA in the United States.

Only McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas MSA, and the Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas MSA, ranked lower.

Valdosta and Lowndes County say the report is flawed and that the numbers don't accurately reflect the strength of the region.

“Lowndes County is most concerned with local indicators and data that is collected as a result of local service delivery,” County Manager Joe Pritchard stated. “Outside studies performed by others that have not contacted our community directly can only make assumptions based on data gathered by third parties.”

Woman dies in wreck

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A 43-year-old Norman Park woman who was killed in a car crash Saturday was distraught that a recent relationship had ended and grabbed the steering wheel just before the crash, officials say.

The Moultrie Observer reports that the two sons of Cindy Maria Giles told law enforcement that their mother was upset over a recently ended relationship and had been drinking

According to official investigative reports, around 11:20 Saturday, 24-year-old William Andrew Shi was driving and brother Jonathan Shi, 19, was in the front passenger seat. Giles was unrestrained in the back seat of the extended-cab Ford pickup truck, where her 3-year-old granddaughter was in a car seat.

“The brothers told me that their mother was upset because her boyfriend had dumped her and she wanted out of the vehicle and they wouldn’t pull over,” Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chad Wynn said Monday. “She wanted them to stop and let her walk home. She grabbed the wheel.”

Police: Man hits woman with fist; woman hits man back with chair, brick

MOULTRIE, Ga. — When a Moultrie woman was punched by a male acquaintance, she retaliated with a chair and a brick, police officials say.

When they got out he hit her with his fist and she responded by hitting him with a chair.

Police reports show that the two then left the scene of the fight together, before things got physical again and went the man struck her again, she grabbed a brick from the trunk of her car, flung it at the man, striking him.

Sister, I don't think they have enough luxury cars running around to support a poverty claim of this magnitude.

This is strange to me since Albany has been a leader in the past. Look at the property tax digest and see if you think this is the case. I don't put much credibility in this report--nothing else I see tends to back it up. We are still tops.........
