Man indicted for vehicular homicide

LEESBURG, Ga. — A Lee County grand jury indicted 19-year-old Steven Edward Mathis for homicide by vehicle in the first degree and reckless driving in connection with the death of 14-year-old Douglas Taylor Bailey, according to court papers obtained Thursday.

The indictment stated that Mathis drove a white 1999 Buick Regal on Magnolia Avenue near Groover Street in Leesburg with Bailey on the trunk. By allowing Bailey to ride on the trunk Mathis “did, without malice aforethought, cause the death of Douglas Taylor Bailey ... “ The indictment went on to state that the action was reckless disregard for Bailey’s safety and caused him “to fall from the truck of said vehicle causing serious injury and death.”

No court date has been scheduled, a Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office spokeswoman said. According to information from the Dougherty County District Attorney’s office, if found guilty Mathis faces from 3 to 15 years in jail.
