ALBANY -- Betsey Caldwell Meyer, 69, died peacefully at home on October 24, 2012 in Leesburg, GA. She was born August 31, 1943 in Miami, FL, the daughter of Thomas Palmer Caldwell and Nancy Dawes Caldwell. She was the great niece of Charles Gates Dawes, the Vice President of the United States under Calvin Collidge and a descendant of William Dawes, who warned American Troops the British were coming in his famous ride with Paul Revere in 1775.
In 1961 Betsey Graduated from Coral Gables High in Miami and immediately married Don Philip Meyer. After raising two daughters, Betsey spent numerous hours as a volunteer with Guardian Ad Litem program and was named volunteer of the year in Brooksville, FL several times. She worked tirelessly to help protect the children of Hernando County and continued to keep in touch with those whose lives she touched. She was active in many other organizations throughout her life including The Garden Club, St. Timothy's Catholic Church and The Children's Home Society of Florida.
Betsey thoroughly loved spending time helping others, especially children, as she was adopted at age 5 and knew the importance of making a difference in their lives. Family and friends were her passion. She loved the beach and mountains and spent summers as a child in North Carolina. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed spending time with friends sharing recipes at Brooksville's Rock Cannery. Betsey devoted most of her time to her family, especially her three grandsons.
Betsey is survived by her husband of 51 years, Don Meyer, Leesburg, GA, daughters, Donna Solomon, Winter Park, FL, Nancy Wollam and husband Scott, Leesburg, GA, and her three grandsons, Michael Solomon, Matthew Solomon, both of Winter Park, FL and Grant Wollam of Leesburg, GA who were the light of her life.
