ALBANY — Albany State’s 24-12 victory against North Greenville on Saturday didn’t just avenge last season’s blowout loss in the playoffs.
It also caught the eyes of coaches around the nation.
The Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll was released Monday, and the Rams moved from No. 22 to No. 16.
Only Bloomsburg (Pa.), which improved from No. 25 to No. 19, moved up as many spots as the Rams, who received 253 points in the weekly poll.
“That was the last loss we had last season, so it felt good to win,” ASU coach Mike White said after Saturday’s victory. “But we are still just 1-0.”
With Valdosta State moving from No. 8 to No. 20 after its loss to Saginaw Valley St. (Mich.), ASU is now the best-ranked team in the state.
North Greenville, which was ranked No. 23 before Saturday’s loss, dropped out of the Top 25.
Other teams from Albany State’s conference to receive votes were Fort Valley State (24 points), Miles (3) and Morehouse (1). Pittsburg St. (Kan.) remains the top-ranked team after defeating Northeastern St. (Okla.), 41-20.
Albany State’s next game is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Wingate (N.C.).
