CTAE budget heads to the DCSS board

DCSS finance committee Chairperson Anita Williams-Brown listens as CTAE Director Patricia Jackson outlines her department’s proposed $360,000 FY13 budget on Wednesday. The finance committee voted 3-0 to move the budget for approval before the full School Board.

ALBANY, Ga. -- The Dougherty County School Board's finance committee on Wednesday voted 3-0 to send the system's CTAE (career, technology and agriculture education) Fiscal Year 2013 budget to the full board for approval.

CTAE Director Patricia Jackson laid out her proposed $360,000 budget, which included $208,893 in Perkins Program improvement funding to operate the program.

Other budgeted items include:

n $50,941 in extended day funding that will allow teachers to accompany students to competitions after hours and other requirements of the Program of Work (POW);

n $40,204 for CTAE teacher apprenticeships;

n $28,123 to pay a portion of the CTAE supervisor's salary.

All of the funding is to come from state grants.

The DCSS's CTAE department prepares students for life beyond the classroom by providing them with employability skills, along with the background needed to succeed in post-secondary institutions, school officials say.

The system offers 27 pathways ranging from agriculture to business and computer sciences.

Duh, it skims over everything and tells nothing. Darrell Sabbs could be in it for all we know. There is a PHD'er teaching FFA in the school system. How many kids in middle school will be farmers from Albany?

I believe the responder meant what actual documentable results have been shown for the program in the past to justify it's existance. Just what percentage of participants have successfully found employment through the teachings of this program, in fields the program has prepared them for? That sort of thing. In other words, aside from employment of those actually employed within the program, how much has it returned for the investment, which is quite substantial?

How so? What is it's documented success ratio? Aside from word of mouth, exactly what do you base your statement on? Hopefully more than one or two isolated annacdotal comments.

exactly....plus these kids needed skills like this. Our society could not survive without these skills and trades. In DCSS, especially at Albany and Monroe, those kids are doing great things with limited funds. Some are deciding on careers in in different areas taught by CTAE and making a good living after graduation already.

Anything that Anita WB does particularly oversight of money is suspect in my view. I would want to know fully about the expenditures and recipients. There is obviously a lot of spaces here surely there are more details. I keep seeing D. Sabb, Joe Washington and #34 with their hands out. D. Maschke, please look this over carefully.

I like the acronym "POW". That's the sound made when the taxpayer takes a shot to the scrotum. Sure makes one feel better to know it was a "state grant" and not "taxpayer money", like salve to a wound. lol

Is it legal to pay salaries with a grant? i don't know, but it doesn't seem like that's legal. And if it is, that's a giant chunk to pay, i'm assuming, on TOP of her teaching pay? someone with the knowledge.....help me out

I can assure you that that Ag teacher at the middle school is worth every penny! Have you thought that since 21% of all jobs are in the agriculture industry that it could be important for the students of DCSS to learn a little about it. I taught Ag at the high school there and can assure you that those students need CTAE classes and that the faculty that makes up that department are some of the best teachers in the entire system.

21% of all jobs are in the agriculture "industry" but most of them are being held by Hispanics, a great number of whom are Illegals, and this is only because so many able-bodied citizens in SOWEGA are unwilling to do the hard work that Hispanics are happy to do. They'd rather sit up on they porch all day waiting for the mail man to bring them their checks.
