BLAKELY -- Samolene Cooper Houston left this earthly life Sunday morning, September 9, 2012 after a lengthy illness, to go to her heavenly home that was prepared in advance for her. She made this world a better place and will be greatly missed by her unbelievably devoted husband, Homer, of 65 years, her loving son Philip and wife, Katherine, granddaughter, Jenny Sobera and husband Scott and children Will, Carter, Lily Kate and Shaw; grandson Hunter Houston, all of Birmingham, Al. and grandson Colton Houston and wife Megan of Tuscaloosa, Al., and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death, other than by her parents, by a brother, Garland (Buddy) Cooper.
Samolene Cooper Houston was born in Miller County, Ga. on May 20, 1928, daughter of the late Ferol Lee and Nina Wilson Cooper. She graduated from Miller County High School and Perry Business College in Albany, Ga. She and her husband Homer Houston lived in Dothan, Al. for the majority of their married life where they raised their son, Philip, and were active Southside Baptist Church. She worked at Woolco Department Store for fourteen years as the Personnel Coordinator before she and Homer moved to Slocomb, Al. There they were active at Corinth Baptist Church and made many new friends. Eventually they moved back home to Blakely, Ga., becoming active at Southside Baptist Church. Sam, as she was known by everyone, was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, devoted daughter, and an exceptional homemaker and cook. She had a heart for small children and especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday morning, September 12, 2012 at 11 A.M. EDT at Southside Baptist Church in Blakely, Ga. with Rev. Rick Smith officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 until 8 PM EDT at the Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home.
