Costumed Batman points gun and runs

ALBANY, Ga. -- A routine escort to a bank turned into a confrontation with an armed man dressed as Batman for an Albany Police Department officer, a police report stated.

No injuries were reported.

Officer Todd Barbree followed a Captain D's Seafood employee in his patrol car to an East Albany SB&T Bank so she could safely make the restaurant's receipts deposit at about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Barbree "heard a noise and told the employee to get back in her vehicle," APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said. "(Barbree) grabbed a flashlight, left his patrol car and drew his weapon."

The armed man in Batman costume, complete with mask, cape and black pants, stood up from bushes at the 2102 E. Oglethorpe Blvd. bank, the report stated. The man saw Barbree and started running.

According to Banks, "Barbree yelled for the suspect to stop. The suspect turned and pointed a gun at the officer. The officer fired one round at the suspect, and the suspect continued to flee the scene."

While running away, the suspect dropped evidence, Banks said. She would not say what evidence, which she said was part of the investigation.

The man in the Batman costume was described as black, 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 160 to 180 pounds. Anyone with additional information is asked to call investigations at (229) 431-3288 or Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS (8477). The Spanish-speaking APD-COP Tip Line is (229) 434-2677.

I know there is a lot of stress involved in shootings, and I understand a miss. From recent results I am getting the impression that the Citizens might be in more danger than the Criminals when our local PD opens fire. Heck, it was even evident in New York City. The Police Union was quick to point out the City had severly curtailed funding for ammunition and practice. I believe it to be the result of budget cuts and no required proficiency maintenance with firearms on a monthly basis. The more learned the response, the more likely it will happen that way in an emergency. If you carry concealed, you should empty the weapon at a target at least once a week, just to make sure your used to it, and where it throws it's bullets. Heck, I even practice with my shotgun to be sure it is shooting where I am looking. Yes, it costs money to practice. However it is a lot better to hit the Perp than to hit a bystander. Especially in this litigacious society.

Two thieves--two misses. This one, however, concerns me. Poorly lit area, black man, black costume late at night.

I wonder if the festooned felon had red high heels on.

"Two thieves--two misses." I'm sure there will be more "misses". Too bad, maybe if they were able to hit their target Albany would be lesser of worthless individuals.

Officer Barbree, Thank You for protecting the citizens of Albany. I am sure the young lady you helped is grateful whether you hit the perp or not.

While I am sure it displeased you that someone wasn't killed or wounded: the real point is the officer was there and his presence kept the lady that was dropping off the money bag from having a very bad, if not tragic end to her evening. As soon as the "perp" turned to run the officer had no choice but to cease fire else he is shooting someone in the back fleeing from him that has not fired back. He would get fried for that too. Ya'll never miss a chance to slam the APD, even when, in my opinion, here they did everything right.

Dear Tonto, a police officer observed a felony occur in his presence and was assaulted himself. The felon got away clean and is still out there, presumably to commit further violent felonies. He did NOT do everything right. If he had, the criminal would be in custody. While I'm not sure of this particular officer's condition level, have you seen the typical APD officer? It looks like a "before" lineup for a Jenny Craig commercial.

Agree with Jacob, if the officer had done his job this guy would be in jail. If this perp is willing to point a gun at an officer in uniform what do you think he is willing to do to Joe citizen?

I guess Batman decided to do a little Robbin (Robin)

On a serious note, it's a good thing the officer was there with the employee as no doubt a robbery was in the making.

It's true a lot of officers look out of shape, but at least they are willing to do the job. I don't see no body builders applying for those jobs. If some people are concerned about the weight of the officers then maybe they should go out and become a police officer.

That won’t happen. Billy Bob just wants to repair cars all day and complain about President Obama, DCSS, and APD (all from the comfort of his double wide). Billy Bob has all the answers but refuses to implement them.... LOL.... Talk about a Monday morning QB

The dropped evidence was his mask according to WFXL.

APD, watch out for the Bat signal in the night sky. LOL On a serious note though, I am glad the officer and the lady is ok and was not harmed.

Too bad Batman did not trip over his cape. Now he'll have to buy another Batman mask. Of course next time he may go as Spiderman or The Green Hornet.

Ok Chief Proctor says everybody to the firing range. Guess they need to hand out some blanks for use by the officers. If they are only firing to SPOOKE them they dont need to hit an innocent person with live rounds. Practice so you can hit the target otherwise get a cap pistol.

Who pays cash for a big dinner at a restaurant these days?? And do ALL businesses get police escorts when the Manager brings out the money bag to deposit? Some weird stuff here.
