EDISON — The Dougherty softball team is already coming off a history-making season after reaching the state tournament for the first time ever in 2011.
And it’s clear in 2012, the Lady Trojans want more.
After starting the season 0-3, Dougherty has won eight in a row, including its seventh and eighth Wednesday is a doubleheader sweep of Calhoun County, 18-0, in Game 1 and 17-1 in Game 2. Both contests lasted just three innings as the Lady Trojans used seven inside-the-park home runs to roll.
The winning pitcher in Game 1 was De’Shaara Brunson (2 Ks, no hits), followed by Takiya Davis in Game 2 (2 Ks, one hit).
Leading the way at the plate for the Lady Trojans (8-3, 3-1 in Region 1-AAAA) was a host of Dougherty batters who combined to post impressive stats between the two games: Brittany Fowler (3-for-4, inside-the-park HR, 5 RBI), Quinnesha Gatling (6-for-7, 9 RBI, 4 inside-the-park HRs), Ra’Keta Shelton (3-for-6, 2 inside-the-park home runs, 3 RBI), Davis (4-for-6, two 2Bs, inside-the-park HR, 2 RBI); Dominique Anderson (4-for-6, 2B) and Reshonda Taylor (4-for-6, 4 RBI).
Dougherty returns to action today in a key region game against Albany High.
