Squawk of the day - Sept. 14, 2012

"I saw someone actually texting during a wedding ceremony and during the prayer. What is sacred anymore? Put the cellphones down. It would do you good to listen to the services. Don't text and go to church."

I may go to a wedding but you won't catch me at church. If one wants to bow there head a say some words to a fairy tale character don't mind me if I text someone, shouldn't bother you with your praying and all.....

Fairy tales abound, but take a look at DNA. The DNA strand in every cell of your body. It tells that cell what it is supposed to do. If you hold one end and let it unravel, it looks like a ladder. It is 5 feet long. It has million of rungs. Each rung has 4 proteins that can be arranged 5 different ways. It is a computer code. The probability of this arranging itself accidently in only 4.5 billion years is nil.

0

FryarTuk 1 year, 11 months ago

Not really. Consider amaranthus aka pigweed. In about 2 decades it has rerouted its cellular structure to resist any form of herbicide. In fact, agricultural experiments suggest that some of the herbicides enhance pigweed's growth . It is emperical evidence for the proof of evolution which I take is what you arguing against. Even though evolution is true doesn't preclude the existence of a Creative Force in the universe.

0

RedEric 1 year, 11 months ago

So the influence of outside force creates a change and that supports evolution? As before, fairy tales abound, but evolution cannot explain the eye, the Cambrian explosion etc. it looks like we nearly agree. People make a mistake by cementing themselves into a position and refusing to look at alternative explanations or reasons.

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

Oh the irony of your last sentence... Evolution is settled science. It is as settled as the fact that the earth revolves around the sun.

0

FryarTuk 1 year, 11 months ago

"So the influence of outside force creates a change and that supports evolution?" No, I said that evolution doesn't "preclude" the existence of a Creative Force. I would suggest that existence itself is the best support for a Creative Force. Science shouldn't frighten people to create polar arguments. Two of my favorites, Richard Dawes, Christopher Hitchens(RIP), in particular, don't seem to agree with that even though recently I heard Dawes acknowledge there is 1% chance of a creator. Of course, theCambrian explosion is controversial topic in paelobiology but even if it were true I don't see how it would impact my idea conversely.

0

RedEric 1 year, 11 months ago

Ok Fryar, in my opinion we are very close to agreement. Maybe not the same page, but the same chapter. BillyBob, there is no such thing as settled science. The job of a scientist is to question everything. An evolution zealot is akin to a religion zealot, neither will accept questions.

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

No they are not equivalent at all. And yes evolution is settled science. There is not a legitimate scientist on the planet who rejects evolution. It is as settled as the earth revolving around the sun (despite your claim that there is not such thing as settled science the whole earth around the sun thing is settled too.)

terihdfxr1 1 year, 11 months ago

If we evolved from Apes or Monkeys why are there still Apes and Monkeys ?

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

Humans didn't evolve from apes. Science doesn't say they did either. Humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor.

0

USTPC 1 year, 11 months ago

Fryartuck......If evolution does in fact happen why do we not continue to evolve? Why do we not see new animal species evolving before our eyes? For that matter, why do we not see us humans evolving before our eyes? We are the same as we were 2000 years ago. You would think if evolution was a fact that we would see all kinds of changes but in fact we see none.

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

And you see god? Would you say there is more evidence for evolution (it is currently observable in various species by the way) or for the Christian god? If you could actually cite the evidence, that would be great.

0

FryarTuk 1 year, 11 months ago

But we do, we do continue to evolve. Average heights have changed over time. Neanderthals were short stocky species. During the middle ages heights changed up and down. Some of the changes were ascribed by a group of scientists due to food quality and climate. It doesn't matter it shows the elasticity of the evolutionary process. There are a lot more nuanced examples dealing with the size and weight of organs and the use of orgrans in the homo sapien. In a lot of organisms they simply fulfill their genetic destiny.

0

USTPC 1 year, 11 months ago

I step outside and see evidence of God everywhere. I have a basic understanding of how the body functions, heals itself, etc. and see evidence of God. I look at the thousands of different species of animal, insect, plants, etc. and see evidence of God. I look at the galaxy and universe and see evidence of God. What I do not do is look at all that and think something came from nothing and then "evolved".

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

Then I would suggest you go to a college and enroll in a biology course. Then, I would suggest you enroll in an astronomy class -- a paleontology class too.

1

USTPC 1 year, 11 months ago

Actually I have a BBA degree and have taken the classes you suggested but until you produce something from nothing then I will believe in a higher God.

0

Kenny36 1 year, 11 months ago

Hey Hoodie, You must believe in education about as much as you believe in God. "Their" not "there"..."and say" not "a say". You must be a product of cheating teachers in the Dougherty County School System. I pray you see the light and get saved before its too late. What has made you so bitter ?

0

Hoodie 1 year, 11 months ago

Slang here works just as much as when I text while driving at the Drs Office in line at the register during prayer and any other time I wish lol I'm a Lee County High School Product and I assure you cheating went on there during my years and I'm sure it continues today especially for sports athletes

FryarTuk 1 year, 11 months ago

Drat! I put that in at 4:15 AM & there were no other comments.

0

Shinedownfan 1 year, 11 months ago

I know! I hate when that happens... you think you are first, then BAM... all these other comments appear later that morning. Those comments are the ones that still need to be submitted for review, translation... new commenters.

I travel a lot and always amazed to walk into restrooms And hear a loud voice coming from a stall. Kind of like they think they are private and nobody can hear their loud conversations. Hapoens in airports and other places. Kind of strange to be in a stall 3 feet away and some nut talking at top of his lungs to office or wife. like the other people really want to hear all this.

2

waltspecht 1 year, 11 months ago

Probably better than some of the other things you might hear right after a Chilli Cookoff.

0

chinaberry25 1 year, 11 months ago

People are hooked on texting as badly as they are hooked on drugs. It is the gossip mill running rampant. Someday they will look back on their lives and wonder where the memories are for they cannot even enjoy a mill with a family and making memories. It is really sad. Schools need to discuss this more because the parents aren't.

The person in spin class next to me was texting during our recovery times. If you can't put down your cell for an hour, then DON'T COME TO CLASS. I'm trying to get away from electronic devices for an hour.

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

Did they force you to text during that hour? Oh, they didn't? Well then you succeeded in getting away from electronic devices for an hour. Congratulations!

0

TrixibelleBento 1 year, 11 months ago

I don' t think you understand where I was coming from. If you text next to me, it affects my workout. The bikes are less than a foot apart. When you crank up your cell to text, it lights up the screen, and that screen lights up next to me. We're in a darkened room. I'm trying to enjoy my workout, and I've got this stupid screen lighting up next to me.

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

You being affected by a phone screen illuminating is a you problem not a me problem. Plus, at the spinning classes I've attended it is usually in a darkened room with music playing and lots of motivational encouragement from the instructor and other participants. It's not exactly the library.

I thought a guy in church was texting or playing a game on his phone, then I realized he had downloaded a BIBLE app to his smart phone. It may not be what it seems ! !

0

And I see you were devoted during the prayer.

What happened to the good old days.Three TV channels if you had an antenna and they signned off the air at midnight. Rotary dial landline phones in any color as long as it was black. No air conditioning except at large stores and movie theaters. Gas at 25 cents a gallon. All airline planes had propellers. Pet dogs running loose all over the town.People spitting tobacco on sidewalks.Life expectancy around 65 years. Stores closing around 6 PM and on Sundays. Rude people talking loud at the movies. It seems we still have rude people.

0

rightasrain 1 year, 11 months ago

RUDE people are those who 'invite' you out to dinner, lunch, etc and then spend the 'quality' time they have reserved for you, texting other folks.

0

jglass 1 year, 11 months ago

Chinaberry , I agree with you. Environmentalist, yes a lot of people have their bibles downloaded on their phones, so it is no always what it appears. Don't get me wrong I have a cell phone, talk on it, text and take pictures. I AM NOT addicted to my phone at all. I wish God had not given whom ever the knowledge to invent the cell phones. People are missing out on so much by keeping their eyes and fingers glued to their phones (droids, iphones, smart phones.....whatever) It is so sad when someone grabs their phone before they even roll out of bed in the mornings and it stays in their hands 90% of the day. They are really missing out on life!!!!

1

Hoodie 1 year, 11 months ago

My Droid has done nothing but enhanced my life instant communication with people I care for. Instant access to my daughter her whereabouts and grades. Email at my fingertips camera and calculator anywhere I may need them. I always have it and check it throughout the night!

Cell Phones supposedly are not allowed in Lee County School Classrooms but if a Teacher takes a Cell Phone away from a student who is caught texting during class then the teacher can expect to get complaints from the parents to the principal or assistant principal for taking the phone up. Including angry emails etc. Parents take the attitude that They bought the phone so how dare a teacher take it from their child. The parents lose sight of the fact that their child was texting or emailing in class and not doing class work. Guess they are hooked at an eSrly age.

I thought you got "fined" for being caught using your cell phone at Lee Co. High...

0

sld28sld 1 year, 11 months ago

There is a fine for being caught with the phone or other electronic device in school during school hours. The 1st offense is $10 which has to be paid in person by the parent. The phone is then given to the parent so that the parent is aware that the child's phone was taken up.

My Lee County High student has a cellphone and knows, if the phone gets taken up in school because HE choose not to follow the rules, then the phone will be at the school until the last day of classes for the year. I don't condone students not following the rules. It makes me even madder when I have friends tell me that their child sent them a text during school and THE PARENT RESPONDED!!!! This just tells the student that it's okay to text during school hours and it's okay NOT to follow the rules.

Parents that are getting upset about their kids not following the rules are probably parents that speed down the road and tell their kids it's okay to go over the speed limit. These parents set examples that it's okay to pick and choose which rules to follow and then get bent out of shape with authorities when their kids are caught following the example they set.

0

alleebrin 1 year, 11 months ago

Whatever these folks are doing comes from their upbringing. They conduct themselves as they have seen their "parents" do. So what can we older generation do about that? lol

0

Amazed2 1 year, 11 months ago

Nope some teacher just ignore that the kid is texting. If the parents dont care then why bother. Teachers get little support anyway from the office. Its kind of like shoot the messenger. Lee County basically promotes what is a reward system in the form off a contest for a teachers that have the least amount of student write- ups. Basically kind of like when the police lower the crime rate by telling officers to either reclassify the crime and/ or dont write it up in certain situations. It aint a problem unless its a problem.

I was at a funeral service and there were people texting and playing video games on their phones etc.

0

Shinedownfan 1 year, 11 months ago

OH! VSU, I dont think Bubbasmithredneck is da corch. He is too stupid to be da corch. I am having an argument with him on Sept 11th's Squawk of the Day about Sister_Ruby's deleted post, trying to explain to him how to click "3 replies". His username insults other Bubba's, Smith's and Redneck's out there.

0

VSU 1 year, 11 months ago

You may be right. Da Corch might have been annoying and obnoxious at times but he wasn't stupid. Although he makes some comments that was in the same childish format of Da Corch's. In an argument with Bubba? Ha! Ha! Go get 'em girl. Ha! Ha!

P.S. I just looked at your post on that squawk. Bubba hasn't responded to it. Guess he hasn't figured it out yet.

jglass 1 year, 11 months ago

alleebrin, that is not true. I was not raised with a cell phone and did not get one until my daughter turned 16 and at that point we all got one. I do not live on my phone. (Just using my experiences as an example.) Now, there are some instances where the kids repeat how they were raised. This cell phone, etc. is something each individual has indulged in themselves. They are missing out on a lot and they will regret it one day.

Some of these blogs have Cambian explosions. I started out just wanting to be first comment.

waltspecht 1 year, 11 months ago

Unfortunately todays Society is far more shaped from Peer Pressure than Parental Exposure. It consists of what Society will tolerate. The Cell phone text being well tolerated. I can recall when unless you were an Adult you didn't speak at the table other than to politely ask for the food to be passed. Sure has changed since then.

0

billybob 1 year, 11 months ago

Yes it has changed. For the better in my opinion. Children being able to speak at the table is a good thing. Technology is a good thing.

1

jglass 1 year, 11 months ago

Well, do you remember when you were at work................no personal calls were allowed unless it was an emergency? Now, people are on their cell phones at work ALL the time!!!!

0

TrixibelleBento 1 year, 11 months ago

How about those rude ones who are on their cell phone at the drive-thru or in line at a fast food restaurant? It's time to take their order and they're having an in-depth conversation about how their baby daddy is running around on them. Meanwhile, everyone in line is staring at them and they're oblivious to the problem.

1

HalfFan 1 year, 11 months ago

Progress has happened. Not too long ago I was traveling with a laptop a pager and a cellphone. Smartphones are great. Now everyone needs to learn how to not offend others. My cellphone never offends me but yours does. Get out of the way and leave my tech alone.

0

Margie 1 year, 11 months ago

Cell phone and texting has resulted in 0 verbal commuication. People now are texting everything. Family members text each other when they are in the house at the same time, rather than call out to the person, or go and tell them what you want or need. There are strict laws regarding teen drivers, which includes texting, but imagne a father or mother teaching their son or daughter to drive, but the parents text when they are under the wheels. Do as I say, and not as I do, seems to be the message. I do think that out of respect for others especially at weedings, and funeral services, show some respects. But, in a church service, one needs to be careful with assuming, because people are now able to download the Bible using their SMART phones of IPADS, tablets, and enjoy the service. In fact, I know a minister that has his IPAD in his hand when giving the message, instead of the Bible. The key to all of this is RESPECT for one another.
