KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — Georgia Southwestern senior golfer J.P. Griffin fired a 3-under 69 on Tuesday to lead the 21st-ranked Hurricanes to a ninth-place finish at the season-opening 19-team Kiawah Island Invitational on the 6,875 yard, par 72 Cougar Point Golf Course.

Griffin finished runner-up in the 95-player field with a two-day, two-round total of 5-under par. The Glennville native was a stroke behind medalist and former Darton golfer Shad Tuten from Armstrong.

Former Lee County star Nate Gahman shot a 76 to finish with a 6-over 150. Matthew Whittaker and Jungsun Lee shot 81s on Day 2 and Andrew Ritchot carded an 83.

GSW finished with a 307 score on Tuesday and a 602 overall.

GSW returns to the links Oct. 1 for the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational at the Country Club of Columbus.

DARTON STRUGGLES IN 2012 OPENER: The Darton State College golf team wrapped up one of the Cavs’ worst performances in years Tuesday, finishing sixth in the Coastal Georgia Men’s Fall Invitational.

Darton’s final round score of 312 gave the Cavs a three-round total of 911 — 27 shots behind winner Lee University (Tenn.).

Freshman TaeHyung Kim led Darton on Tuesday with a 4-over 76. Kim, a native of South Korea, shot a team-best 223 over the three-round tournament and was followed by Taylor Martin (229), Parks Brown (234), Nick Green (235) and Madison Turner (241).

“We learned a lot from the tournament. That was the good thing,” Darton coach Bill Jones III said. “Coach (Dale Dover) and I witnessed a lot of things we struggled with and learned some things that we need to start working on. We are going to use this as a learning aid and try to get better for our next event.”

Darton plays again Oct. 1 in the Thomas University Invitational.


Sherwood routs Deerfield, 12-0, in 5; Lee County whips Worth

ALBANY — Sherwood ace Anna Laine Brock struck out six and allowed just one hit in three innings of work Tuesday to lift the Lady Eagles past rival Deerfield, 12-0, in five innings.

Marylen Kennedy came in relief during the final two innings and allowed just one hit.

Sherwood was led at the plate by Brock with three hits and three RBI, as well as Emily Everson, who doubled, tripled and drove in three runs.

Jamie McPherson added two RBI, Kaylen Gore notched two hits and four RBI and Aubrey Green recorded two doubles.

Sherwood returns to action Thursday at Terrell Academy as it looks to remain perfect in region play, then faces a rematch against SGA — the team which has come the closest to beating them in region play — on Saturday in Albany.

LEE COUNTY 11, WORTH COUNTY 1 (5): Lee County’s Erin Callaway was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and allowed just three hits as the winning pitcher for the Lady Trojans, who easily won Tuesday’s non-region game.

Also with good games at the plate for Lee County were Ashley Nichols (2-for-3, RBI), Lauren Davis (2-for-3, RBI), Jenna Kitchings (1-for-2, RBI), Danielle Davis (1-for-2, 2B, 2 RBI) and Brittani Brock (1-for-2, 2 RBI).

Kaitlyn Walters stole home in the top of the first inning to score Worth County’s only run.

Lee County plays again today in a doubleheader at Tift County.
