10 things to know in metro Albany this week (Sept. 23-29)


RAY CHARLES BIRTHDAY: 2 p.m., Ray Charles Plaza, front Street, downtown Albany. ARCMF, X-tratainment and Chill Bar and Lounge presents Ray’s Birthday Celebration, a free event that features a huge birthday cake, berry tea, an a capella version of “Georgia on My Mind” by Sheila Raye Charles and a presentation by Mayor Dorothy Hubbard. The event will further announce the upcoming Albany’s Ray Charles Music Festival, scheduled for Oct. 27 in support of The Cancer Coalition of South Georgia.


DOUGHERTY COUNTY COMMISSION: The board’s work session starts at 10 a.m. in the Government Center, 222 Pine Ave. No agenda was available.


LEE COUNTY COMMISSION: The board’s regular meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Page Tharp Center, 102 Starksville Ave. North, Leesburg. On the agenda: J. Smith Lanier & Co. will present review of benefits and mid-year update.

ALBANY CITY COMMISSION: The board’s regular meeting begins at 8 p.m. in room 100 of the Government Center Building, 222 Pine Ave. Agenda items include: Recommendation of the Committee of the Whole to approve option one regarding multimodal site study funding to include $150,000 from the current fiscal year and an estimated $125,000 from the general fund next fiscal year; adopting a Redistricting Plan to be effective beginning with the 2013 Election; amending City Code to enact an expanded curfew for certain special events; amending the pension plan.


PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS: Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital will be host 6 p.m.-8 p.m. a prostate cancer awareness session at the Phoebe Northwest Conference Center. Prostate cancer survivors, friends and family are invited to a light dinner and presentations by Dr. Michael Daugherty from Albany Urology Clinic and Dr. Rex Ajayi from South Georgia Urology Clinic.
