MONDAY'S PREP/COLLEGE ROUNDUP: SGA's Houston throws no-no

ASU volleyball sweeps through conference tourney

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Albany State volleyball team was a perfect 6-for-6 over the weekend in the conference crossover tournament.

ASU began the three-day tournament Thursday with a trio of 3-0 victories against LeMoyne-Owen, Stillman and Lane.

The Lady Rams then swept Tuskegee (25-22, 25-17, 25-18) and Miles (25-5, 25-20, 25-17) on Friday and defending conference champion Kentucky State on Saturday (25-8, 25-14, 25-16).

ASU improved to 10-7 and will play again today at Claflin.

The Lady Rams will be on the road for three straight days before coming back home to face Benedict College on Sunday.

DARTON XC FINISHES 3RD, 6TH: Jared Richmond and Cody Mallchok finished among the top ten at the University of West Georgia Invitational to lead the Darton State College men’s cross country team to a strong third-place finish on Saturday.

Richmond finished ninth overall and six seconds ahead of teammate Mallchok, who finished 10th. Hank Campbell, Luis Navarro and Nick Mascardo finished 14th, 20th and 23rd, respectively, for the Cavs, who scored 71 total points.

The Lady Cavs finished sixth in the invitational.

Sophomore Jeronda Stringfield led the effort, running the women’s 5K in 20:24 to finish 21st. Freshman Alexis Skiles was right at her heels, finishing 22nd in 20:25. Elena Oslund (21:11), Hayden Clapper (21:29) and Vanessa Pina (22:14) finished 30th, 33rd and 41st, respectively. The Lady Cavs finished with 135 points.

THOMASVILLE — Southwest Georgia Academy’s Allison Houston threw a no-hitter Monday, leading the Lady Warriors to a 13-0, four-inning victory against Brookwood.

It was the first varsity no-no for Houston, who was one walk away from a perfect game.

“She had good control and had great defense behind her,” SGA coach Tommy Manry said. “Everybody was catching the ball and making good plays, and she had control of all her pitches and did a really good job.”

Bailee Everson, Morgan Everson, Katie Carver, Addison Ponder and Brooke Hornsby all had two hits for SGA, which improved to 19-8 and will play again today at home against Deerfield.

SHERWOOD 4, SGA 3: Emily Everson had a bases-loaded, game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Lady Eagles to a key GISA Region 2-AA victory on Saturday.

Sherwood pitcher Anna Laine Brock threw all eight innings and struck out 11.

Marylen Kennedy (2B, run), Jamie McPherson (2 hits, 2B, 2 RBI) and Kailynn Gore (RBI) had big games for Sherwood at the plate.

The Lady Eagles improved to 8-0 in the region and play again at home today against Brookwood.

Cross Country

ALBANY — Over 300 runners from 15 schools competed in the Deerfield Darton Dash cross country event Saturday at Darton State College.

Perra Harell from Westwood took the Varsity Girl’s top honors with a time of 20:19.

Southland Academy’s Wright Calhoun took third place overall with a time of 17:17, and Marcus Gouthro from Deerfield-Windsor took fourth place overall with a time of 17:31.

Deerfield Windsor’s top girl runner was Madison Sauls with a time of 23:55. Mount de Sales took both team championships, while Southland was runner-up in the boys division.

Deerfield placed fifth out of 10 boys’ teams. Deerfield’s girls’ team finished third, Westwood fourth and Southland fifth.
