Flanked by two members of the Albany Police Department Gang Unit, Maj. Bill Berry, of the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit gives the details of a bust involving guns, drugs and possible gang members Tuesday.
ALBANY, Ga. — Alleged Blood gang members were among those arrested on drug, gun and other charges Tuesday, stated an Albany Police Department report.
In a connect-the-dots investigation that started with a 3 a.m. shots fired call at Dennis Homes public housing, uniform officers, the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit, The Gang Unit and SWAT found themselves working a long day.
“They (uniformed patrol officers) responded and stopped the vehicle leaving that area that had weapons recently fired. They smelled the gunpowder,” said ADDU Commander Maj. Bill Berry. “Three suspects were put in custody. There were some drugs, so they called the Drug Unit. Because of some behavior and some tattoos ... they were gang members, Bloods.”
While searching the 2007 gray Ford 500, reports said that officers found a .40-caliber and a 9mm handgun under the seats, a bag of marijuana and two bandanas known to be signs of Blood membership.
Police reports stated that Dominique Pittman, 21, was charged with three possession of marijuana counts, including intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school. Frederick Allen, 20, and Detravious Britton, 21, were charged with possession of marijuana and all were charged with criminal gang participation. The Gang Unit was called in.
“We are pursuing gang participation charges on the individuals with weapons in the vehicle,” said Gang Unit officer Prurince Dice. “More charges are pending on forensic evidence.”
After questioning the suspects, police called SWAT and a search warrant was executed on Pittman’s residence at 2301 Nottingham Way, reports added. Once at the apartment, police arrested Marcus Thomas, 24, and charged him with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school.
While the marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in the apartment, according to the reports there were no guns or evidence of gang membership at the apartment.
Developing more information, ADDU agents took up positions at the Sleep Inn on Dawson Road. When they saw Derrick Moore, a man with about 12 traffic and drug warrants on him, they arrested him.
With search warrant in hand, Berry said agents found 2.5 pounds of marijuana, $1,500 in cash and an ounce of cocaine in Moore’s motel room after 4 p.m. More charges are expected.
