Squawk of the Day - Oct. 1, 2012

To the Squawker about cell phone hell: You left out the people who use their cell phones in public restroom stalls. One can only hope they drop them in the toilet.

I love my cell phone, but folks are in bondage to them. They can think of nothing else. I have just this past month closed my cell phone out and went to a prepaid one. It is with less frills, but a lot cheaper and does what I need. No more high bills and I still can talk and text. And I can enjoy family the way it should be.

And that is really disgusting. Nothing is so important that it can't wait until after you get through....

and Obama will win in November.....hahahahahaha!!!

That is uncalled for... Even on your cell phone in the restroom.

Another worthless, pointless comment from Duh Huh Corch that has nothing to do with the topic of this squawk, but what else would you expect.

My new policy for my office, if you walk in talking on your phone, I keep doing whatever I am already working on without even speaking to you. Believe me, it does not take them long to hang up when they realize my time is important than competing with your phone call.

Well, I have a cell phone and I still have the "normal" cell phone. As long as I can call, take pictures and text, I am fine. However, the cell phone does NOT run my life. My son-in-law is probably the WORST person with a cell phone he is texting ALL day long and in the internet surfing ALL day long..........................Drives me nuts!!!!! Glad I don't have his bill!!!

1

daisymae 1 year, 6 months ago

My, now ex-son in law was doing that...my daughter found out he had a girlfriend that he was steady texting. And the butt would be texting the girlfriend while having dinner with his mother in law, father in law, wife and sister/brother in law at the table.

you go daisymae......everyone should do that!!!

I had a bit of a victory this past weekend. I was at the gym, plugged into my iPod music and was happily enjoying my workout until this woman two machines down from me started yapping on her cell, so loud that I could hear her over my music. First I turned to look at her with a bit of a scowl; that did not work. She didn't see me or acknowledge my existence. That went on for another 5 minutes until finally I turned to her and said, "can you please quiet down? I can hear you all the way over here!" She acted alarmed, apologized and quieted down so I couldn't hear her. It's time to take back the world I used to know, one where I can be in a public place and not be subjected to your oh-so-interesting minutae.

When you work for a boss whose philosophy is, "when I call you had better answer," your mind might change. Also, there are these things called conference calls, which can take hours. I have been through many-a-drive-thru while on a conference call.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 6 months ago

You wrote "When you work......" well that rules out about half of Dougherty County now doesn't it? But it's that same half that walk around ALL DAY LONG, EVERYWHERE with a cell phone jammed upside they head.

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

I was just pointing out that not everyone is blabbing to their "BFF Jill" about going to da club later, some people are engaging in business activity.

0

daisymae 1 year, 6 months ago

Yes, just today I watched a guy with his cell phone crammed in his ear, pull right out in front of another vehicle, had the second vehicle not blown his horn they cell phone guy would have broad side him.

0

TrixibelleBento 1 year, 6 months ago

Nope, I don't care about that philosophy. If you get that call from your boss, you need to remove yourself from your workout/restaurant/grocery shopping/conference/restroom and go to a place that you can speak. If I can figure out how to accomplish this, why can't others? And yes, I have a cell phone owned by a boss that demands the same thing. I answer with a whisper, "hold on", until I can get to a place where I can talk. It's not rocket science. It's called common courtesy. I don't want others listening to my conversations just as I don't want to listen to others'.

I'm sure the fast food workers at the drive-thru appreciate you talking on a conference call while they're trying to do their job!

3

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

It isn't difficult to put the phone on speaker, place in the cup holder, and order my meal. It's the drive-thru, not fine dining.

I'm sorry but if I get too many calls from my boss, coworkers, or employees on a daily basis to do that. If I did, I would not be able to do anything. Not everyone yells on the phone while talking. Believe it or not, some people have important jobs...

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Second paragraph should read, "I'm sorry but I get..."

0

TrixibelleBento 1 year, 6 months ago

So you're saying that only important jobs require the constant use of cell phones? Wow, it must be amazing to be that important. I run my own business too and it's amazing how much I get done without a cell phone to my head 24/7. What would you do without one? There was a time when business somehow got done without them! We even sent a person to the moon before they existed!

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Ms. TrixibelleBento, I did not say that only important jobs require the constant use of cell phones. What I DID say was, "Believe it or not, some people have important jobs..." This meant that if you see someone in public using a cell phone they might be conducting business and not blabbing to his or her friend about nonsense.

Apparently people are not picking up on the subtlety. I do not think I am special because I have to be attached to my cell phone at all times whether I am at work, at home, or on vacation. It is simply an unspoken rule of where I work. I do not condone texting/emailing while driving or using a phone in public if you are not capable of doing such. I am simply saying that SOME PEOPLE ARE ENSURING THEY HAVE GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT BY BEING ON THE PHONE.

If my statements were confusing in any way please feel free to leave a message after the beep.

Some people have convinced themselves they look important if they are talking on a phone while driving. Appearances are deceiving most often.

1

MRKIA 1 year, 6 months ago

NOT TO MENTION THOSE WALKING AROUND WITH THOSE RIDICULOUS LOOKING BLUETOOTH DEVICES HANGING ON THEIR EARS. SEEMS LIKE THEY WANT ONE TO THINK THEY ARE SO IMPORTANT. WATCH WHEN APD HAS A CAMERA OPPORTUNITY, YOU SEE 3-4 FAT BOYS WITH THESE HUGE BLUETOOTH THINGYS ON THEIR EARS. PLEASE GUYS, THIS IS NOT IMPRESSIVE. IT REALLY IS SO COUNTRY LOOKING.

1

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 6 months ago

MY thoughts exactly, MRKIA. The stupidest looking people have that stupid looking "june bug" thing hanging off they ear.

1

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Agreed. Bluetooth devices may be somewhat functional, but they look ridiculous and require you to talk loud for the other party to hear you.

1

Jacob 1 year, 6 months ago

LOL. Was that directed at Sherwoodboi? Cause I was thinking the same thing. Get over yourself. It cant wait.

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Ok? I will continue to answer my phone and be a responsible employee for my company. The majority of the people complaining are retired individuals who can't come to terms with how things have changed in the working world.

Jacob, how did I make you think that I feel I am better than you because I have to use the phone in public? I just have a real job with real responsibilities that require me to answer my phone when it rings.

0

Jacob 1 year, 6 months ago

why do i think that you think you are better?

"Believe it or not, some people have important jobs..."

Let me clue you in- driving and talking on the phone is dangerous. .The risk is similar to drunk driving. There is a reason your company has a policy to prevent you from doing so. Trust me, self important is not the same as truly important. Again, get over yourself, hang up the phone and pay attention to the road.

1

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Jacob, let me clue YOU in. TEXTING and driving is similar to drinking and driving.

Let's use our reading comprehension skills. "Believe it or not, some people have important jobs..." Did I say that I feel that I have an important job? No. I was making a statement that some people have to use the phone while in public for legitimate reasons. Not everyone is incapable of talking and driving at the same time. Believe it or not, some people are more capable than others at doing simple tasks. This is why some people make more money than others. People have differing levels of talent, so don't lump everyone together and say that no one should drive a car and talk on a cell phone.

If my statements were confusing in any way please feel free to leave a message after the beep.

1

Jacob 1 year, 6 months ago

"Did I say that I feel that I have an important job? No."

How about this that you also posted? LOL You are pretty simple, aren't you?

"Hold the phone! As a member of corporate America with many employees under my supervision..."

1

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Jacob, that was a good find. I'll bet it took you a few minutes searching though all of my posts. The only problem is you didn't finish the rest of my statement.

"...I can tell you that on many occasions I have requested termination for employees only to have it denied by human resources as a CYA action. I obviously don't have any insider knowledge of what his supervisors did or did not do, but don't be so quick to say 'the boss is just as liable.'"

Jacob, I'm sorry you feel inadequate. For future reference, please try to stay on topic, thanks.

"...I can tell you that on many occasions I have requested termination for employees only to have it denied by human resources as a CYA action"

So your employers don't listen to you either. I can see that. I only know you through your immature tripe you post here and I don't value your opionion much either. Sorry to leave you to your hissy fit, but I have to go to work now. You've been quite entertaining. BTW, if you would stop working yourself into a lather over internent posts and maybe pay more attention to that corporate job with many (lol) employees to supervise, perhaps your bosses would listen to you sometimes. Oh yeh, and start obeying their no cell phone policy. That way we will all be safer. ; )

Oh Jacob, I do regret being sucked into are argument with someone like yourself. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors.

Damn you autocorrect.

Jacob, I regret allowing you to suck me in to an argument. Best of luck to you, kid.

Sher as a responsible employee, you might want to consult you company’s attorney. I have worked for a boss who too thought “when I call, you had better answer". After I raised the point of his demands increased our company’s liability exposure because he was causing employees to drive distracted he now allows for a return call if he leaves a voice mail to call him or other directions, this allows employees to find a safe place to park and talk and does not expose the company to increased legal risk.

1

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 6 months ago

Thanks for that input. The company's official stance is not to talk/text/email while driving, but that is a CYA policy from legal.

I also wish I had a flashing sign sign :hang up and drive" for those cell phone chatting idiots who do not even bother to look as they pull out in front of folks, don't use a turn signal because they don't have enough hands to talk on the phone and drive.
