Acree to be keynote speaker during ASU's Founder's Day Convocation

ALBANY, Ga. -- Albany dental practitioner and entrepreneur Sonya Taylor Acree will be the keynote speaker for Friday's Albany State University Founder's Day Convocation at 10 a.m. in the university's ACAD Auditorium.

The festivities will celebrate ASU founder Joseph Winthrop Holley, the pioneer and educator whose vision for equal access to education has enabled people to come to Southwest Georgia and earn a college degree since 1903. This is the 110th Founders Day Celebration.

With the theme "Embracing Change: Investing in Our Future" Holley's commitment to education will be celebrated with a day filled with special events.

Acree, a 1990 ASU graduate, currently serves as the treasurer of the ASU Foundation Board of Directors. In 1994, she graduated from the Medical College of Georgia with her Doctorate in Dentistry, ranking 13th in her class.

An avid ASU supporter, she has distinguished herself as a dental practitioner and entrepreneur. She is CEO of the Center for Cosmetic Dentistry located in Albany and Ashburn, and a senior dentist with Albany Area Primary Health Care and Glover Dental Center.

Immediately following the convocation, a memorial service will be held at Holley's gravesite, located in front of the L. Orene Hall Building on campus.

The Founders Day Luncheon is scheduled to begin at noon in the Student Center Ballroom. Luncheon tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. To purchase tickets telephone the ASU National Alumni Association at (229) 435-2386 or the ASU Office of Alumni Affairs at 229-430-4658.

Other Founders Day events include the Alice Coachman Relay for Life kick-off and the ASU Family Reunion Student and Alumni Fish Fry. Both events are set to begin at 4 p.m. at the practice field located between Sanford Gymnasium and L. Orene Hall.
