A car sits crunched under the rear portion of a school bus at the intersection of U.S. 19 South and Lester Road.
BACONTON, Ga. — A group of Mitchell County school students were taken for medical evaluations after their school bus was struck by a car Thursday morning.
The Georgia State Patrol worked the wreck , which witnesses say happened Thursday morning at the intersection of U.S. 19 South and Lester Road.
GSP officials told reporters that a Mazda Protege struck the rear of the bus. Mitchell County Schools officials were on the scene Thursday.
Mitchell County Schools Superintendent Victor Hill says that all 21 students aboard the school bus at the time of the crash were taken for evaluation at the Mitchell County hospital. He said that only three had complained of any soreness, but that out of precaution, all would be evaluated.
By the end of the day, all of the students had been checked out and had been released to their parents.
The driver of the car was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
"For our piece of mind and that of the parents, we're going to have them all checked out to make sure they're OK," Hill said. "Our prayers are obviously with the driver of the other car because it just looks awful."
Hill said that the intersection where the crash occurred has been a problem in the past for crashes and that they have asked for the speed limit to be changed to no avail.
Hill said that that he and and the school system's transportation director will review the accident and make a determination on whether the bus driver acted appropriately.
