ALBANY, Ga. — Firefighters, responding to a report of a house fire on the 1300 block of East Society Avenue Friday morning, found a blaze started by electricity that should not have had power.

Battalion Chief Keith Ambrose says that initial reports were that one of the apartments in the duplex at 1323 E. Society Ave. was occupied. And despite the fact that Albany Water, Gas & Light had no power flowing into the apartment where firefighters believe the fire originated, the occupant managed to use an extension cord inside the apartment, which is what firefighters think caused the fire.

“The unit had been red-tagged by WG&L, which is supposed to mean that there is no power flowing in,” Chief James Carswell said. “We’ve notified WG&L and they’re investigating it.”

Upon arrival, firefighters made three searches of the apartment to ensure no one was inside before attacking the fire, which had traveled into the attic space of the concrete-block building.

Ambrose said witnesses to the fire said that the man who was living in one of the apartments was known to use a charcoal grill as a source of heat. Carswell said that after a preliminary investigation, however, the cause of the fire is believed to have been electrical in nature.

“When they cut off the power, they typically put a sleeve or boot on the prongs where the meter was, but in this case, the boot either malfunctioned or was tampered with and allowed power to the apartment,” Carswell said.
