ALBANY, Ga. — Theatre Albany officials are hoping that folks will want to do some “Dancing in the Moonlight” to music they’ll hear through the Grapevine this Saturday.

Woodstock, the community theater’s primary fundraiser of the year, will start at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Shackelford House, 1801 Dawson Road.

Jodi Mann will open for the popular Grapevine Band, which will perform while participants dance beneath the stars.

There will also be a picnic-style buffet dinner, a cash bar and a silent auction.

The evening’s goal is to generate funding for Albany’s oldest fine arts organization, which has provided eight decades of entertainment for the community.

“This is the third year that we’ve done the event,” Theatre Albany Board Chair Lauren Brock said. “The event gets bigger and bigger. When you get a bunch of theater people together, you have a lot of people that like to dance and have a good time.

“It is outside and it is very casual,” she said. “It’s called ‘Woodstock’ because that’s the theme we began with, but there’s no hippie theme or anything like that. It’s neat because it is casual and you can bring your own lawn chairs and blankets, sit with your family and friends, and enjoy the music.”

One of the biggest draws for the Dancing in the Moonlight event will be the sounds provided by the Grapevine Band.

“We had the Grapevine Band last year,” Brock noted. “We booked them last April to come back because the response was so great. We had people who were upset that they didn’t get to see them because they had other engagements last year, and we had specific requests to bring them back again.

“We’ve had the band booked for a solid year. They have a kind of following. We had a lady who called from out of state and reserved tables to come see them. Hopefully, they’re going to bring a crowd.”

And the crowds at Theatre Albany events have been pretty strong this season, Brock said.

Woodstock comes as Theatre Albany wraps up the second weekend of its run of the comedy “The Fox on the Fairway,” which features Kevin Armstrong and Doug Lorber as a pair of duffers whose annual golf tournament — and their heavy wagers — turn the country club upside down in farcical fashion.

That entertainment wouldn’t be produced in the same quantity and quality without fundraisers like Woodstock and the Valentine’s Day dinner theater generating revenue.

“They’re very critical to Theatre Albany,” Brock said. “Theatre Albany is the oldest arts organization in Albany. We also are the only nonprofit organization in Albany that has to pay property taxes. There are lots of issues we have that are unique to our organization that make it even more important that we have our financing through fundraisers and through donations.

“We are 100 percent supported by our box office sales and donations from the community. They’re critical to our organization.”

The cost for Woodstock is $45 per person or $500 for a table for eight, which also comes with the bonus of two complimentary bottles of wine.

Items from local offices, stores, shops and service industries will be available at the auction, and the food is being catered by Lynn Mertins.

“We’re excited about the event,” Brock said. “We hope it’s going to be a good turnout. It’s very important to our sustaining the live theater in the community and keeping it going.”

Tickets may be purchased by calling the theater office at (229) 439-7193 or by visiting www.theatrealbany.org online.

The "Grapevine" bad is good and plays music for a somewhat older (60-ish) crowd. But they could do without those two clowns who stand out front and do nothing but beat the tamborines and dance rather crazily. I did attend the event last year and overall this is a good venue with wonderful catering.
