Albany State University Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble. The Symphonic Band has existed since 2004 when the ASU wind and percussion students were divided into intermediate (Concert) and advanced (Symphonic) groups. An annual concert has been given every April since 2002. From 2003 until 2011 this concert was given jointly with the now decommissioned Albany Marine Band. The Symphonic Band has also performed for the HBCU-National Band Directors Consortium Annual Convention in 2007, 2009, and 2011, for the Georgia Music Educators Association District II Honors Band Clinic in 2005 and 2007, and for the GMEA District IV Honors Band Clinic in 2006. Dr. Michael D. Martin, Conductor of the Symphonic Band, holds degrees from Youngstown (Ohio) State University, and a Ph.D. in Music Education from Kent (Ohio) State University. He has been at Albany State University since 1999, and also has ten years experience as a school band director in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He has publications with TRN Music Publishers as well as articles in the Journal of Band Research and the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education. No admission charge. The Albany Symphony Orchestra's season finale features young Armenian-American clarinetist Narek Arutyunian, winner of the 2010 Young Concert Artist auditions in New York. Arutyunian has performed around the world including recent performances with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Hear him in the dazzling Clarinet Concerto by French composer Jean Francaix along with Debussy's Impressionistic Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Ravel's ever popular masterpiece Bolero.
