ALBANY -- Funeral services for Ellison R. Rabun, who died Monday, April 9th at his residence will be held Friday, April 12, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Kimbrell-Stern. Revs Leigh Ann Raynor and William Collins will officiate. Entombment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Ellison Rabun was born in the little town of Stapleton, GA, which is located in Jefferson County, on February 19, 1919 to Gus A. and Lucille Denton Rabun. In 1937, the family moved to Augusta, GA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. His service included several of the Philippine Islands. After returning home to Augusta, he met Mary Edwin Turner, who was from Fitzgerald, GA and they married in 1948.
In 1950, he was transferred to Albany from Savannah, GA. by Community Loan and Investment Corp., later Blazer Financial Services, where he was manager until his retirement in 1981.
He was a member of Albany Golden K for nearly thirty years, in which he held various offices through the years. For many years, he was club treasurer. He was Kiwanian of the Year two times - in 1990 and 2011. He was also a member of the Civitan Club for many years, serving as President in 1968.
Mr. Rabun was a charter member of Porterfield United Methodist Church and member of the Sojourners Sunday School Class. He was an usher at the early service, and when he was no longer able to do that, he claimed his space on the back pew, so that he could get hugs from many of the ladies coming into church.
Mr. Rabun was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Turner Rabun and sisters Philo Rabun Waldrop and Billie Rabun Morris and his brother F. Truitt Rabun, all of Augusta, GA.
After the death of his wife, Mary in 1987, he and one of his former managers, Howard Arata, took many trips across the country. Later he and his special friend Carmen Sumner traveled to Germany. He wrote chronicles of his trips so that his family could enjoy his adventures as well.
He loved spending time with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as G'Daddy.
He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Rabun Hinman (Ray), granddaughters Melissa Hinman Bullard (Ben) and Christina Hinman Thornton (Adam), great-grandson Turner Mulford, great-granddaughters Abigail Thornton and Carly Thornton, and step-great-grandsons Gavin Bullard and Grayson Bullard.
The family will receive friends at Kimbrell-Stern Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Memorials may be made the Albany Community Hospice, 2332 Lake Park Dr., Albany, GA 31707.
