ALPHARETTA -- Mary Smith Starr formally of Albany, Georgia, widow of J.W. Starr, Jr., died in Alpharetta, Georgia, on April 9, 2013. Her memorial service will be on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Albany First United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM with Rev. Carrie Myers officiating.
A native of Decatur County, Georgia, she was the daughter of Orson and Gladys Smith. Mary graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1940 and from Wesleyan College in 1944. She taught middle school English at Deerfield School, and then at Darton College towards the end of her career. Mary was a member of Albany First United Methodist Church and of the Fellowship Class and a teacher of the Hawke Sunday School Class. She was a member and past chairman of the official board, and a faithful member and past president of the UMW. The P.E.O. sisterhood was also an important part of her life for years.
She was married to J.W. Starr, Jr. for 62 years until his death in 2007. She is survived by her two children, John W. Starr, and Susan Starr Woolbright and spouses, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Smith Carruth and her brother, Dr. Orson Smith, Jr., her sister-in-law Mary Laura Martin and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to First United Methodist Church Miracle Wheels fund, or the Permanent Endowment Maintenance fund.
