Congress should leave Social Security alone

Letter to the editor

We American senior citizens have worked in our lifetime and we felt as if Social Security would never ever be touched, but look out. We’re not so sure now. It seems to me there are enough things could be touched to leave older people alone.

There are programs to be gone after. Why older Americans?

I say go after Medicaid and leave older people alone. This is older Americans’ livelihood. Let this alone, So be it. Worldly speaking, “Look out!”

First of all, Nadine....Social security was not meant to be the only source of income for the elderly. It is not a "livelihood." Second of all, Obama(your precious savior, you love so much from your recent letters) seems to be leading the charge on cutting social security. Many people who NEVER EVER PAID ANYTHING into social security are receiving payments. Instead of being thankful that you are getting any social security, you are complaining. I know when I get old enough to draw mine, it will not be there and I have planned for that...and yes I paid into it.

Problem is,the Politicians have already allowed it to be touched by modifying program requirements. Looking upon Drug addicts as disabled and eligable for early benefits. Program administrators and their employees actually encouraging marginal people to file for disability so their case load increases and their job becomes more secure. Then can we openly discuss the fraud throughout the system? How many of you know folks living together that won't get married because it would affect their survivor status and benefits? How about those that use the money to buy drugs, no I don't mean the legal kind. How about the extended families that fail to report the death of the member drawing benefits and continueing to use the money. Every now and again I think we should get a visit to make sure it is actually us receiving the benefits. Just some thoughts from one that expects SS to become income and savings limited so only the Poor will benefit.

Nadine, sadly enough the program will be touched. And as you can see everyone has someone to blame. It's the nature of our society that people hate change if it may affect them. No matter where the cut go, someone will be mad and those that it don't effect will be glad, such is the nature of people.

I AGREE THAT SOCIAL SECURITY SHOULD BE UNTOUCHABLE, AND POINTEDLY SO CONCERNING THOSE WHO HAVE PAID INTO THE SYSTEM. S.S IS, BY MY DEFINITION A TRUE ENTITLEMENT PROGRAM. MY PAYING INTO THE SYSTEM THE REQUIRED MINIMUM AND THEN SOME "ENTITLES" ME TO RECIEVE BENEFITS. S.S. WAS TOUCHED A LOOOONG TIME AGO. YOU CAN GET BENEFITS AND NEVER PAY A DIME INTO IT.
