Squawk of the Day - Monday, April 15, 2013

"I am amazed at the number of contributors on here who claim to be such good Christians, yet post some of the things they do towards others. If your behavior is indicative of how you were raised, go back to the slums. It makes me glad to be an atheist. If I thought for a second there was an afterlife, I would be sick thinking I had to spend it with you phonies."

"Christians aren't perfect......just forgiven"

0

alleebrin 1 year ago

I agree with this squawker wholeheartedly! Of course, the interesting thing about the organized-religion concept, sin all you want to and then ask for forgiveness - over and over and over! Such a joke! A very good friend of mine once said, "If you accept the customs and traditions of your ancestors, you don't have to think for yourself."

0

agirl_25 1 year ago

I have to agree there...about people who sin over and over and then ask for forgiveness and then everything seems fine. The ones most prominent are the preachers of the megachurches who take money, well beg for money, then do unbelieveable things, but ask for forgiveness then go on their merry way. Paul Crouch, Jimmy Swaggart, Oral Roberts, Billy James Hargis (who died a few years ago - do you think he is in heaven?) Then there is Robert Tilton, Bob Larson, Pat Robertson, and who can forget Jim Bakker.

You need to take note that you are doing the very same thing by your "squawk" that you're accusing others of. I guess that makes you one of the phonies! LOL

No, but you will be spending it with some folks I would hate to see in the dark.

Then stay away from the postings. If this is all you have to complain about, then you have a better life than you deserve.

While this squawker may be an athiest, I am not. And the very reason given in this squawk is the reason I no longer no to church. Tired of seeing people thump themselves on the chest and brag about how Christian they are, when the example Jesus set was not only being a Christian but DOING Christian--you know helping those who need help, regardless of the circumstances, no questions asked. There are a whole lot of people who sit in churches on Sunday that is going to bust hell wide open...

The message of Jesus is very simple, believe in God and love your neighbor. How ya gonna do a years worth of sermons based on that? Churches are a business. Did you ever wonder why liberals don't want a cross on a memorial but don't care about churches not being taxed?

0

FlunkyMonkey 1 year ago

So that is the best you can come up with? Churches are business? When Jesus was 12, He stated, I must be about My Father's business? Can anyone these days tell me what that business is? Before you answer, ask yourself this, "How many people did I witness to last week? How many people did I invite to church last week? How many backslidden Christians did I call on last week?" And I am not talking about the affluent or well off, I am talking about people like me...the kind most people refer to as trailer park trash....

0

RedEric 1 year ago

Jesus attacked the church because they were to concerned with money. Tithing was for people like farmers and animal husbandry people who depended on God for their livelihood. Carpenters etc were not required to tith. Most churches are money driven. That is what I mean. Bragging about yourself does not do good for Christianity. Modesty is important.

0

FryarTuk 1 year ago

Mediacom seems to be dried out so lemme try this.

Flunk says: " (Jesus) stated, I must be about My Father's business? " Well, I don't think he actually posed it as a question but we'll take it from there. The statement proves two things. 1- the liberals were not in charge because apparently there were no child labor laws. 2 - He was a Libertarian, He was going to tend to his knitting and get things done. I know the conservatives claim Him because he said he was going to take care of "business." But they weren't too familiar with His Father's business. If He's available next election I may write in His name.

0

Jax 1 year ago

He did pose it as a question, albeit a rhetorical one: "Know ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" (Luke 2:49 NKJV) I realize I am knit-picking at this point, but I just had to out it out there.

Reminder, we are ALL HUMAN. Whatever you believe in is your choice, God gave us freewill. Jesus is the only one who walked this earth SINLESS. I go to church, I am a christian and I don't let what others do interfer with my worship. Am I perfect, no......but I know God is still working on me!!!!

0

FlunkyMonkey 1 year ago

As long as your worship isn't disturbed then life is good. What about the Great Commission? When was the last time you took care of Your Father's business? Or is sitting in a church three times a week fulfilling His command to you? When was the last time you asked someone to church, or offered the plan of salvation, or prayed WITH someone, not just for them? HOw many times did you post an invitation to church and include the name of your church, and times of service? Yes you are human but too many times Christians use that as an excuse not to do something. Enjoy your week.

Squawker, I can assure you there is an afterlife and there will be a Judgment Day--for all of us. I am sorry that the examples you are getting are poor at best...as I am sorry that no one will take the time to help those of us who are backslidden and waiting to go home....

0

gladileftalbany 1 year ago

How are you "assured" of an afterlife? Someone tell you?

0

How are you "assured" of an afterlife? How are you SO certain there will be a Judgement Day,or whatever? Don't tell me Jesus says so...I need something better than that.

I am amazed that when we face a catastrophe in our life...the first thing that happens is we start praying for God's help. Even those who claim they don't believe God exists will call on his name. After 911, signs were posted EVERYWHERE..God Bless the USA, God Help Us, etc. ALL of us are sinners in the eye of God and the sin of others is no less nor greater than my own. I agree there are those who go to church for show only...they will have to answer for their actions one day. God is just and He is the only one who can judge....and I sure am thankful for that. Many people are quick to judge others, but don't look in the mirror at themselves. I am sorry for those who don't believe in God, it is your choice. All I can do is share God's word with others....it is up to each individual what to do with that information. HE LOVES YOU !!!! There is a lot of meaning in the little saying, "NO GOD, NO PEACE...KNOW GOD, KNOW PEACE".

0

FlunkyMonkey 1 year ago

You say all you can do is share God's word with others but yet you did not offer an invitation to church and it is up to each individual what to do with that information....it appears that the information you are sharing is incomplete since how can you shae God's word and NOT include and invitation to church? I

0

My2cents 1 year ago

By sharing God's word, invitations to church goes hand in hand. I also believe that when people give of their personal time and talents to help better the lives of others, that they are showing the true meaning of being a Christian. Anyone can talk the talk, but it is much harder to walk the walk and actually live your life serving others...but when God is in your heart it is an honor to do things for others, but to give God the praise and the glory. It is not in seeking the honor for yourself.

I am going to live my life as if there is a God and when I die, find out there is not a God, then to live my life as if there is not a God and then die and find out there really is a God and Heaven. Lot of comments of sharing church times, the word and invitations to your church, but have you considered more charitable works than given time and dates. Charitable works are God's word in action by you, an invitation to your church is just an invitattion to come and listen to your preacher. Buy a homeless person food, GIVE unwanted clothes to shelters, instead of yard sales, pay for a dinner check for a couple you do not know or go to funeral of a person you never met.

I read the Bible daily, spend 30 minutes in prayer 2x a day. I love my wife and find my solace outside, away from the hippocites in an over priced, archetural monster created by men to impress men with to many damn rules just to be considered a MEMBER. If you believe that God knew you before you born. then you have to believe he knows our quirks and also what we have in our hearts. The only prayer Jesus Taught us to pray in Private behind closed doors begins with "Our father who art in Heaven". he then goes to say not to pray like hippocrites do to draw attention to themselves, also do your business in private.

Will God send me to hell because I choose not to attend a modern day church, Maybe! Will God send me to hell because I choose to pray in private, admiring the beauty that surround me, Maybe. That Is a risk accept.

Will God send an Atheist to hell because he does not believe, yet does good deeds. loves his wife and children, has never comitted a crime and lives a good moral life...I am not even going to begin to know what God thinks or will do to people like that.

Every one is entitled to thier own oppinion. I do not agree with being an atheist, but who are we as Christians to judge? Can't we comment on here without telling the Squwaker to go kill themself?

2

alleebrin 1 year ago

Those who are comfortable with their religious beliefs don't tell someone to kill themselves and they don't feel a need to go on the defensive! Religion came about in the dark ages to control the masses, and it's still used for that purpose today. However, if you need a crutch to get through the day, then religion is an acceptable prop.

I tend to avoid commenting on religious themes and on the political ones when they get so heated, but do like to read most of the posts in the Squawks. Rock, I must say your response to today's squawk is one of the best I have read so far, especially the last 2 paragraphs. While I admit I am not a true believer (I have too many unanswered questions) I must say those last 2 paragraphs were really well written, in my opinion. I don't consider myself a religious person, maybe I am more of an agnostic, one who feels we will never truly be able to know about the ultimate origin and causes of the universe. We won't truly know until death comes, will we? Maybe the squawker has a point, maybe we should go back and read some of the comments made and think about what he/she said. Remember everyone has a right to have an opinion, but why attack them for their opinion? OK now let the attacks on me begin...in 4, 3, 2, and 1......Mrs. Dilligaf

How do you know all of the contributors are Christians? Some could be atheists just like you.

0

waltspecht 1 year ago

If there is but one God, how do you explain all the different relegions throughout the World? How do you explain all the Churchs within the same sect? Why the different interpretations of the same book, whether it be Koran or Bible? How do you explain all the deaths through the centuries involving relegious war? Why would a Muslim hate a Christian if the believed in the same one God or vice versa? There is a God, but I don't believe he resides in a church whose building could have fed thousands with it's cost, or in the Preacher that is more of a showman and businessman than a servent of a just God. Note that a Morman Lay Leader gives his percentage to the church and is unpaid. Why do some of these mega church Preachers pull in six figure salaries, houses and cars? Makes me wonder.

2

rock 1 year ago

I believe a Priest or Preacher or Pastor, by whatever name they are called should be paid to an extent. However, No leader of his church should be living in a means above the AVERAGE of his congregation. Six figures, autos, 6k SqFt houses should never be funded by the congregations.

Jesus said Give up everything you have to follow me! Modern day preachers say Give me everything to preach to you!

1

jglass 1 year ago

FlunkyMonkey, I do invite people to church, I do talk about my beliefs. To me "religion" is man's beliefs not God's. We are to believe what is in the bible and live by that. I pray with and for many on a regular basis. I have also purchased clothing, shoes, school supplies, etc. for children where I have gone to church........there was a need and my husband and I fulfilled the need without any questions asked. When there is a need and we can give we do not hesitate to give. The "church" is the people, not a building. And, like my daughter has always said I would rather not do something and find out it was ok.... than to do something all the time and find out it was wrong in God's eyes. Yes, I have faith and I do believe there is a God and one day we will all find out. Oh, and come visit our church..............Albany Christian Church, 1501 Whispering Pines Rd. Services begin at 10:30 each Sunday. Would love to have you worship is song and service with us.

Churches can be great places in the community. They help the needy, ect. but religion is a crutch for weak-minded people. Study early man and how religon came about as a coping mechanism for a harsh world. If yer main argument involves blind faith in yer god and yer ability to recieve communications from god, and anyone that doesnt share yer beliefs burning in hell. Well thats just silly make believe. U cant turn yer back on the real truth. And why is it that the most religious r the most hypocritical?

I must have missed something, what does-- going back to the slums have to do with this posting? It sounds both elitist and racist to me.

Whether one has a belief in a higher power or not, there is little room for the "isms" that keep holding society back.

I hope the best for those who have not made the leap to understand that they did not make themselves.
