No charges filed against man whose image was taken with stolen phone

UPDATE: Two women have been charged in the phone theft. To see the story, click here.

ALBANY, Ga. — UPDATE: The Herald has received a report from the man in the photo's father who says that his son was questioned by police and then released without being charged. The Herald is working to verify the father's statement with police and will update this story once we do.

When a purse with the owner’s phone inside was stolen from a car at Westwind Apartments on March 31, the victim may have thought she’d never see them again.

But in a strange case of techno-ignorance, the perpetrator may have been identified with images from the phone itself. Police officials believe the thief didn’t realize that photos made with the device go automatically to the owner’s Facebook page, said Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department. At least two photos, which were later determined not to be images of the ones charged in the incident, appeared online, officials said.

The APD is asking anyone who recognizes the so-far unidentified black male in the photos to call CRIME STOPPERS at (229) 436-8477 to make an anonymous tip, or the Police Department at (229) 436-8477.

Do facial recognition with the mug shot file and you will find him.

Priceless. This will go national. My kids will go bananas when they read this about their hometown.

Terry, you need to cover the arrest and court appearance of this one. If we keep this up, we can get our own reality show in Albany!

Some idiot did the same thing 2 years ago, according to the Herald. I wonder if he ever got caught. His picture tho was of HIM taking a picture of HIMSELF.......how clever is that......so he probably blamed the one who took his picture.

Stealing cell phones is pointless these days. It seems the phones are smarter than the crooks. LOL

Believe it or not, the same exact thing happened in Savannah two months ago. According to the Savannah Morning News, some thug broke into a tourist's car and stole her cell phone. The phone's camera was set up to automatically post all photos to the woman's Facebook page. After reporting the crime, the woman returned to her hotel and checked her Facebook page. Sure enough, the idiot had taken a picture of himself sitting in his mama's kitchen. The woman called the police, who recognized the buffoon as a well-known criminal with a lengthy record. He was quickly arrested.

Must be a copy-cat buffoon. However, remember he is still a suspect until proven guilty in a court of law while being defended by a lawyer we pay for. Most likely will use the "first time I ever done this" defense.

That is the sad part, huh dingleberry? He will have a public defender. Our tax dollars at work.
