ALBANY, Ga. -- The Albany Dougherty Payroll Development Authority's Development Review Committee approved variances to covenants in place at the county's Pecan Grove Corporate Park during a meeting Wednesday.
The newly appointed committee, comprising developer Danny Blackshear and the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission's Ted Clem and Justin Strickland, approved variances for the former American Signature Bedding structure recently purchased by Better Brands and a proposed design for a structure to be built for the Georgia Federal-State Shipping Point Inspection Service on eight acres of land at the corporate park.
"The Better Brands building was built 10 years ago by the Payroll Development Authority, so we wanted to grant these variances so there's no compliance questions once they occupy the building," Clem said.
Some of the variances granted the Better Brands facility allude to screens over existing transformers and generators, curb-and-gutter design, parking, fencing and signage.
A variance was also approved for the proposed Shipping Point Inspection Service building in reference to a covenant that requires a structure to cover 10 percent of the area of the site on which the structure sits. The proposed 22,435-square-foot design of the ag inspection service's new facility does not cover 10 percent of the eight-acre tract purchased by the company.
"The way that parcel sits, the back part of it is undevelopable anyway," Blackshear said.
The Development Review Committee was granted the authority to grant such variances by the PDA at a meeting of the authority last week.
