DCSS sets meetings for parents of students affected by school closures

ALBANY, Ga. -- Because of declining enrollment, the cost of maintaining schools, and other factors, the Dougherty County Board of Education voted in March to proceed with a plan to close and consolidate several schools.

Date and Location of Parent Meetings:

All meetings begin at 6:30 p.m.

April 22 Alice Coachman Elementary School

April 23 Live Oak Elementary School

April 25 Merry Acres Middle School

April 29 Albany Middle School

April 30 Radium Springs Middle Magnet School of the Arts

May 2 Southside Middle School

May 6 Jackson Heights Elementary School

May 7 Turner Elementary School

May 9 Radium Springs Elementary School

There will be meetings for parents of students whose attendance zone has been affected by the school closures. The schedule of meetings is outlined below.

School officials say parents are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting scheduled at their child's new school for an opportunity to meet the leadership and staff and make new connections for learning. During the scheduled meetings, parents will receive information about enrollment and the transfer of student records.

Administrators will be on hand to answer questions about the changes. Parents who use bus transportation will also have an opportunity to sign up for next school year.

Interim Superintendent Butch Mosely said in a recent letter to parents of re-zoned students: "It is my hope that this transition will lead to new levels of system effectiveness and student achievement in our school system. Our board and staff have a vested interest in the success of your student.

"Your commitment to your new school, its leadership and teachers, is an important part of your child's academic success next year. I hope to meet you at the parent meeting and look forward to working with you to make our schools all they should be for your student."
