The Sherwood Christian Academy girls soccer team holds up the No. 1 sign Thursday evening after beating Georgia Christian, 7-0, to secure the program’s first region title. The Lady Eagles, who are led by eighth-year head coach Jason Schultz, far left, improved to 18-3-1 and posted yet another shutout behind goalie Hannah Thompson. The Lady Eagles will now prepare for the state tournament, which begins next week with them hosting a first-round game as the No. 1 seed out of GISA Region 3-AA.
ALBANY — Led by eighth-year head coach Jason Schultz, the Sherwood girls soccer program won its first region title in school history Thursday night following a 7-0 win against Georgia Christian.
“I didn’t have to say a whole lot. The girls were excited, they doused me with water and we just celebrated,” Schultz said. “There was just congratulations all around.”
The Lady Eagles (18-3-1, 5-1) got goals from Diamond Clarke, Katelyn Cuff, Riley Nobles, Aubri Hughes, Molly-Kate McCleran, Hannah King and Jordyn Paramore, who set the school’s single-season scoring record Thursday with 26 on the year. Hannah Thompson posted the shutout.
Sherwood next faces a non-region game against crosstown rival Deerfield today — weather permitting.
DWS BOYS SOCCER 3, TATTNALL SQUARE 0: The Knights wrapped up their regular season Thursday with a shutout victory, getting goals from Andrew Sullivan, Chapman Ivey and Joe Tondera.
Deerfield, which is now 10-2 overall, will open the state tournament as a No. 1 seed Tuesday at home against No. 4 Loganville Christian.
DWS GOLF WINS THREE-WAY MATCH: The Knights (314 team score) beat defending state champ Tiftarea (318) and Brookwood (323). Deerfield was led by John Leach (76), who tied for low medalist with Tiftarea’s Thomas Bucket, followed by John Cole (78), Charlie Ellis (80) and Flint Bekkers (80).
DWS now gets set for the region tournament, which will be held May 7 at Doublegate.
