Lee County Commission holding retreat in Savannah

ALBANY, Ga. -- Lee County Commissioners are holding their annual strategic planning session at 10:50 a.m.today at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront hotel.

Commission Chairman Rick Muggridge said commissioners and a couple of staff members left a day early to attend the planning retreat before the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia begins its annual three-day run.

Muggridge said all five commissioners planned to attend the session in addition to Interim County Manager Lynn Taylor, County Clerk Christi Dockery and Finance Director Heather Kittrell.

Because all five commissioners will be attending the session, it's considered an official meeting.

The planning session will be conducted in the Johnson Conference Room on the second floor of the hotel.

Muggridge said no formal action is anticipated. He said the session will be facilitated by Pat Merritt of the Georgia EMC and Dave Wills, government relations manager for the ACCG.

Items on the tentative agenda to be discussed, Muggridge said, include the process of hiring a new county manager and potential changes in fire and EMS services.

Leesburg City Council members held a planning retreat this past Saturday at Coney Lake Lodge in Lee County. Partly at a result of that meeting, the city council is considering hiring a city manager.

I understand there's a fine, new conference center just out highway 82. Was that not good enough for your "retreat?"

Naw, we don't want to mess up the carpets before some important event rental. Besides, there are no good seafood restaurants in the area and there isn't any nightlife in the country. Is this center findable with a Garmin GPS yet?

I see these new commisioners are fitting right in. Why didn't one of them that was going to save us all kinds of money suggest the new library we just wasted millions on.

Why on earth would a politician do anything said, in particular saving money?

These retreats (junkets) might be customary, and they may or may not be productive. But it looks like a waste of tax payers dollars to drive 200 miles to have a special meeting, when it could have been done much closer to home. Bad perception my friends.

And perception is reality in this case, Oldster.

How nice - a long fun weekend in Savannah when the local facilities, i.e., Grand Island, are finding it hard to stay afloat! lol

It appears that the Lee commish folks are in Savannah for the statewide gathering of county commish folk. Having a meeting there, where there is a temporary concentration of wise commish type minds, might make sense. I notice two names of individuals on the agenda whose titles imply such wisdom.
