ALBANY, Ga. — Classes and final exams going on in Darton State College's "J" building were temporarily disrupted Monday when the discovery of a bookbag in a bathroom prompted school officials to evacuate the building.

A possible bomb threat call came in from the building — which houses the college's allied health, community service and theater programs — at around 12:35 p.m. Tracy Goode, dean of institutional advancement and public relations at Darton, said a student reported that a black bookbag was sitting under the sink in the first-floor men's restroom.

An initial investigation revealed nothing suspicious about the bag, which contained school supplies.

"(Darton's campus police and administration) made the decision to evacuate the building temporarily," Goode said. "We called over the (Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany) dog unit and they gave the all-clear.

"It is better to be safe than sorry. We are further investigating whose bag it is."

Darton Police Chief Jim Brackin said the agency would be following up to see who the bag belongs to and whether is was left there intentionally.

While brief, the search did temporarily displace those students who had arrived to take final exams. Students were allowed back in around 1:40 p.m., officials at Darton said Monday. The Albany Fire Department did respond at Darton but was turned away by campus police.

None of the other buildings on campus was impacted by the incident.
