Planning board approves request

ALBANY, Ga. -- The Albany Dougherty Planning Commission approved with little discussion an application to expand an existing South Slappey Boulevard storage facility. The decision was made at the commission's monthly meeting Thursday.

Todd Lanier, of Lanier Engineering Inc., spoke on behalf of South Slappey Mini Storage, asking the commission to approve an application to add 54,000 square feet of storage space at the facility at 1150 S. Slappey Blvd. The addition to the business would add 42 storage units in three buildings.

"What we're asking is that we simply be allowed to take advantage of the unused portion of the lot where the business already exists," Lanier said.

The Planning Commission approved the request by a 6-0 vote with no additional discussion.

Planning Manager Mary Teter told the commission the requested application is consistent with the county's future land use map and noted that the Planning department recommended approval of the application.

Board members were informed about a pair of training sessions planned for September by the Georgia Association of Floodplain Managers, one of which will be held at the Flint RiverQuarium in downtown Albany.

The central and southwest GAFM regions are holding the training sessions over back-to-back days (Sept. 25-26) to give members and non-members an opportunity to choose between the sessions. The conferences will cover the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act; an overview of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wetlands jurisdictional determinations, regulations and permitting and mitigation banking; erosion and sedimentation control regulations and permitting, and will include an elevation certificate workshop.

The Sept. 25 workshop will be held at the Flint RiverQuarium in Albany from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an optional tour of the facility to follow. The Sept. 26 workshop will be held in Suite 306 of the Houston County Government Building in Perry from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

GAFM members, as well as floodplain administrators, engineers, surveyors, builders, Planning and Public Works staff, real estate developers, architects and Realtors are encouraged to attend the informative workshops.

Early-bird registration will be conducted through Sept. 18 at a cost of $25 for GAFM members and $30 for non-members. Registration is available at the Association of Floodplain Managers website.
