Police vehicle struck at traffic stop

ALBANY, Ga. -- An officer of the Albany Police Department was injured late Tuesday when her vehicle was deliberately struck by another driver, police officials say.

According to Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the APD, Sgt. Denise Barnes sustained minor injuries around 9:24 p.m. as she attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Wells Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Officials say the the driver of a black Dodge Avenger was stopped because of erratic driving and that the car initially narrowly missed striking Barnes' vehicle.

Banks said that after the car made contact with the police vehicle, the unidentified driver abandoned it in the 400 block of Wadkins Avenue and ran away on foot.

Barnes was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment and observation, officials say. She was later released. The case was under investigation Wednesday.
