Cancer STOMP to raise funds for Cancer Coalition

ALBANY — Multiple businesses and individuals in the region are jumping in on the cause to end cancer through the “Cancer STOMP” campaign being conducted by the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia.

Ongoing through Sept. 14, there are some events set to take place as part of this campaign. The first of these programs is “Dueling Pianos” set for 7 p.m.-11 p.m. Saturday at the Nelson-Tift Building at 226 W. Broad Ave.

At that event, there will be two performers playing out requests on two pianos. Tickets are available for $35 per person, and can be purchased online at www.cancerstomp.com or at the Cancer Coalition office at 2332 Lake Park Drive.

There is also an auction set to take place at the event. Some of the auction items can be previewed online. Reserved bids can be placed by calling (229) 312-1700.

On Sept. 14, there are two events planned for that morning at 2701 Meredyth Drive — in the area between The Veranda and Meredyth Place.

At 9 a.m., there is a one-mile reflective walk “Walk to Remember” being conducted as a way, officials say, to celebrate survivors or remember a lost loved one. Participants can walk as a team or individually, and are challenged to raise money in honor or memory of someone. There is no fee to participate.

Those interested in participating can register online. Late registration will take place at 8:30 a.m. the day of the event.

At 10 a.m.-1 p.m., organizations and community groups are expected to have carnival booths set up nearby as part of the “Carnival of Hope.” Those at the booths supply the activity, prizes, tents, tables and chairs as well as the food. Participants will buy tickets from the Cancer Coalition for a price yet to be determined.

Booth sponsors are encouraged to create a “Walk to Remember” team to raise money and participate in any fundraising challenges. Awards will be given during the carnival for those that raise the most money.

At these events, there will be a Wall of Fighters. It will cost $10 to place the name of a loved one on a ribbon for the wall. There will also be signs along a walking path for people to remember or support a loved one at a limit of 12 words for $50.

In the meantime, through Sept. 12, patrons at area business and organizations will be able to purchase “STOMP Prints” to support the campaign. For a $1 donation, people will be able to buy a paper shoeprint and write their names on it to be put on display. Businesses will be expected to submit the total amount raised by 5 p.m. on Sept. 12.

The highest fundraisers will be recognized at the Carnival of Hope, officials at the coalition say.

Sponsorship packages, Cancer Coalition donations made for Cancer STOMP T-shirts and area car dealerships donating a portion of their vehicle sales to the coalition and competing with other dealerships for the “Highest Fundraiser” award will be among the others ways contributions can be made to the campaign, officials at the Cancer Coalition say.

As of Friday evening, $4,916 had been contributed to the “Cancer STOMP” fundraising goal of $30,000.
