Gamma Omicron Lambda wins 3rd national award

ALBANY, Ga. — The Gamma Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. captured its third National Project Alpha Award during competition at the 107th Anniversary Convention in Austin, Texas, in late June. The chapter also won the award in 2010 and 2011.

Additionally, Dr. William R. Berry III, coordinator of the Project Alpha Program, received the 2013 Partners Award Alumni Brother of the Year for Alpha Phi Alpha and the March of Dimes.

Project Alpha is a teenage pregnancy prevention retreat, which began in 1985 at Lake Blackshear. Since its inception, the Retreat has reached nearly 1,500 boys — spreading the message of responsibility/accountability and helping young men answer developmental questions as they advance into adulthood. Additionally, the Retreat, which emphasizes “the man to young man approach,” concentrates on self-esteem, drug avoidance, conflict resolution, law enforcement, and other issues.
