ALBANY — With the Albany State volleyball season less than three weeks away, the Lady Rams’ official schedule was released Wednesday.
The Lady Rams open the season Sept. 6-7 at the University of West Florida Invitational with games against the University of Arkansas-Monticello and the University of Southern Indiana on Friday and games against McKendree University and Florida Tech on Saturday.
“This year’s volleyball team is young but full of energy,” ASU coach Robert Skinner said. “They are determined to continue our winning ways in the (conference) and regional games.”
ASU finished the 2012 season with a 27-13 overall record, claimed the East Division title and was runner-up in the conference tournament after a loss to Clark Atlanta in the championship game.
After opening the 2013 season in the West Florida Invite, ASU travels to Valdosta State on Sept. 10 for a non-conference game against the rival Lady Blazers.
The Lady Rams begin conference play Sept. 19-21 in Frankfort, Kent., when they face West Division foes in the conference’s cross-over tournament. On Sept. 19, ASU plays Tuskegee and LeMoyne-Owen before facing Lane and Miles on Sept. 20 and host Kentucky State on Sept. 21.
ASU’s home opener is scheduled for Sept. 23 against Brewton Parker College, kicking off a stretch of nine out of 12 games in Albany. Highlighting the home schedule is a Sept. 26 rematch of the conference championship game against Clark Atlanta and an Oct. 31 matchup with bitter rival Fort Valley State.
The Lady Rams will step away from their conference schedule to play two tough non-conference foes in the latter part of the season — Columbus State at home on Oct. 16 and Division I Alabama A&M on the road on Nov. 11.
ASU closes its regular season with Senior Day festivities Nov. 15 at home against Benedict before hosting the conference volleyball tournament Nov. 20-22, which will be held in HPER Gym.
